What a strange week to write an "In Theaters" because, well, there is not much coming out in theaters to write about. The Avengers was released today and already breaking records around the world, pretty much every other movie tried to stay away from opening at the same time. There are a few small films out in limited release, but with the exception of The Best Exotic Marigold hotel (which actually looks like good counter-programming) it seems as if they are all releases that the studios just wanted to bury. Yes, I mean this about you LOL and Meeting Evil. if you aren't in a major city it is pretty clear that it is expected that you will be going to see The Avengers or staying home. I will be one of those people going to see it and am only upset that I bought my tickets for Saturday night and still have to wait at least another 24 hours.

In Theaters

1. The Avengers

You are either already going to see it or you aren't and I think we all know it is going to make A LOT of money. At this point, the question is just how much?

2. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

With a stunning ensemble, cast a group of retirees (Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy) decide to create a new life in India at The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. When they get there is not quite the palace they were expecting and then each become transformed as their experience in the country changes each of their lives. It looks like a feel good film that will allow you to just sit back and enjoy watching the work of these wonderful actors.

3. Mother's Day

Rebecca De Mornay stars as a chilling "Mother" who will do anything to help protect her 3 boys while they are hiding out after a bank robbery in a remake of the 1980 film. Her performance looks great and scary as it should be but if you listen to critics beyond some gruesome scenes the rest of the film just falls short. This also comes to DVD on Tuesday, so you might just want to wait for that.

4. LOL: Laughing Out Loud

The Miley Cyrus/Demi Moore film that was made in 2010 gets released in 100 theaters today. If you have any doubt the distribution studio was trying to bury it today I invite you to watch the trailer.

5. Meeting Evil

Samuel L. Jackson is in another movie this weekend, but I don't think he wants to talk about it. Starring in a film with Luke Wilson, he is a man who comes in to help Wilson (and murder people) when his character is down on his luck. It is also available on Video on Demand today, which seems to be an increasingly common strategy for "under-the-radar" films.

At the end of LOL does Sam Jackson appear in the shadows and say "You think you're the only pop star out there?" If not then it shall be forgotten.

I can imagine that the amount of money The Avengers has made up to today, worldwide, is more money than everything Joss Whedon has created in his career (movies, comics, TV shows, etc.).

If only LOL was in 3D it'd surely be topping the box. Damn director and her "artistic integrity".

WOW! Rebecca DeMornay! That's a name I haven't heard in FOR-EH-VER! Makes me wanna watch The Hand That Rocks The Cradle again.

Wasn't she also the chick in Identity? *looks it up* SURE WAS!

The Avengers already got $304,000,000 outside the US, it's definitely going to be the 11th film to get over 1,000,000.

Just saw it. I'm glad I saw it in the theater instead of waiting for video release like I do with about 99% of movies. I really enjoyed, a bit more than I liked Captain America or Thor, close to Iron Man. Definitely will buy it at home release.
