Hey, I kinda wanna see Haywire. I don't know what Alex's review'll be like, but Soderbergh has always been one of those directors who I'll pretty much see anything from. I wasn't particularly bowled-over by Contagion (and Soderbergh admits that they cut a full hour of edited material from that film, which makes me hope for a director's cut at some point), but Haywire looks like exactly what I could use at this point in my movie-going career.
Alex's review of that will be up later today, as will my musings on Underworld: Awakening, which might wind up being the second-best of the Underworld movies after I sleep on it. Does that mean it's any good? Not necessarily.
| 1. Haywire God I want this movie to be good, and the early reviews have been very, very positive. I have a Soderbergh chub that refuses to cease, and I'll see pretty much anything that the man puts out. I'm hoping that his retirement is more of a "I'll put out a movie every couple of years" than a "I'm never making movies again" thing. I suspect it will be. | |
| 2. Underworld: Awakening I don't bear the Underworld series any ill will; I just wish the movies within it were better. We'll see how good the latest installment is. | |
| 3. Red Tails I think everyone kinda wants this movie to succeed, but it's not doing too well critically. I hear it's like an hour of dogfighting, which I could probably stand to see. I'm not getting a terrific "must see in the theater" vibe, though. Kind of surprised it's not in 3D, given the Star Wars re-releases. | |
| 4. Coriolanus Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut is getting exceptional reviews; it's well over 90% at RT. I like my Shakespeare to be paired up with men getting all greased up and wrestling. I don't know if there's any of that in this movie; I'm just saying. | |
| 5. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close This is going with a wide expansion to over 2,000 theaters, so it's effectively the fourth wide release this weekend. I know of literally no one who's been dying to see it, though. Alex certainly put the kibosh on any desire I might've had to check it out. Oh wait, I meant that the first trailer did that. | |
| 6. The Artist Another expanding film, but The Artist is only going to around 600 screens. It'll be funny to see how people react when they walk in and it's a silent black-and-white movie! I know people asked for their money back in a few cinemas in the UK, but I'm betting that there might be riots at some theaters here in the states. | |
| 7. Carol Channing: Larger Than Life Poor Carol Channing! You get a documentary made about you, and then your husband dies right before it comes out. We love you, Carol. | |
| 8. The Flowers of War Although it missed out on a chance for an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Picture, this is still the most expensive Chinese film ever made. And it's got Christian Bale. | |
| 9. Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos Yeah, I call my penis a "sacred star" too. | |
| 10. The Viral Factor Now if I had to go see a Chinese movie this weekend, this would probably be it. I haven't found a good, clean version of the trailer to post, but it looks entertainingly shoot-em-uppy. |
