The trailer for Ang Lee's next big movie, based on the adaptation of the novel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel, has been released. The film is Lee's first since Taking Woodstock in 2009. Due to the popularity of the novel, this film has been highly anticipated.

I did not read the novel, so I don't have that context to compare it to. It does have a very dreamy quality, which I assume might be attributed to the story. However, then I found myself wondering why the CGI seems to be overwhelmingly obvious. It does look as if Ang Lee is trying to create a new visual style - which when it works, it works well. I am willing to trust that Lee knows what he is doing, especially when it comes to visuals, but color me slightly skeptical.

I think the CGI is done that way to give the movie more of a dreamlike quality to it.

You really ought to read the book to understand why he's going the direction he's taking this.

That said, it looks overly sentimental and he went a bit too far with the CGI. I generally rail against trailers without dialogue, but this one takes it because Life of Pi literally only works due to Pi's narrative voice being so compelling and empathetic. I will wait to share a trailer that does include said narrative voice.

I really enjoyed the book but I may be in the minority in that I really don't care for Ang Lee's movies with the notable exception of The Ice Storm.

this could be a depressing movie...I hate watching animals die/get killed..

Man this looks like some Robert Zemeckis stuff eh getting a Lovely Bones vibe from the CGI which does seem rather dream like.

Yeah, that CGI looks very weird. I don't think I like it.
