Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man or The Avengers?

Christopher Nolans batman series is big competition... but back in 2002 Spider-Man broke all kinds of records and the new one has a very very strong cast... then there's The Avengers, which I really don't know how its going to do... like all the films leading upto it have been successful in their own right, but not as much as batman/spiderman... that being said the cast is pretty damn impressive and would have star power, plus theres been quite a few films building up to this, and Joss Whedon so.... I think all 3 are going to be big critical successes, as for financial... I really can't call it...

DKR, easily.

The one with that batty man.

I think DKR just about unless it gets some bad press which it probably won't. I don't think press would affect the popularity of the avengers so I'm going to call that second, or first if the worst was to happen on DKR. Spiderman 3rd always.

The Avengers. TDKR so far hasn't been marketed very much and a lot of people aren't aware that it's even coming out. The Amazing Spider-Man will probably be third.

Batman, dude. Batman.

I'm gonna see the shit out of that Batman movie, I'll just sit at the cinema and watch that film for a week.

I think its a toss up for either Batman or the Avengers. I think Batman might be more profitable though cuz they are going to spend a ridiculous amount of money on marketing for the Avengers.

My bet's on Batman

Post by feargalr (98 posts) See mini bio

The marketing for the avengers though, don't underestimate the marketing, and CrimsonAvengers makes a good point about the lack of a presence of TDKR so far too..... like the marvel movies so far are pretty much just long ass expensive ads for it

I don't get why people are underestimating spider-man so much? Likes its freaking spider-man.. thats a hugely popular character with all age groups... are people forgetting about how successful the Sam Rami movies were!!!!............. financially anyway

I'm guessing The Avengers.

The Dark Knight was a one-off thing for Batman. The original wasn't that successful, but word got out that it was good on DVD. More people then saw it and became interested in the sequel. The film was heavily trailed, big names were attached... And then Heath Ledger died and it exploded. Now, it was an Event. Something that everyone had to see in order to see the last true role that Heath Ledger did and they had to see it as a "tribute" to the man. It was the perfect storm of big fanbase, growing media coverage and luck.

And it won't happen again. No matter how much they market The Dark Knight Rises and no matter how good it looks, it won't do as well because it's not an Event like TDK was and its merely great (compared to TDK) opening will sadly be misinterpreted as an outright failure.

The Avengers, on the other hand, is an Event. Marvel have been gathering steam for years, their films have been doing fantastic, the film is being marketed the shit out of... And this is also what everything has been leading up to. This is the grand payoff of their experiment and everyone is going to want to see how they do it. The Avengers will take it easily.

Spiderman... well, more power to the people who saw that trailer and thought, "You know? This looks like it'll be a good film!"

@jackanderson: You sir make a very good point about the heath ledger related publicity for the movie...

The Dark Knight Rises. Even if Heath Ledger is what brought people into TDK, they stayed because it was a damn good movie, and I'm sure those same people and more will be back for TDKR. It will definitely win the Summer.

Avengers opens May 4, 2012

Amazing Spiderman opens July 3, 2012

The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012

Looking at the schedule, my money is on The Avengers since it has the most time to rack up a big box office total. Spiderman will be released during the Forth of July weekend, so that will aid its final profit. The Dark Knight Rises has its Batman pedigree, the public's affection for Christopher Nolan movies and an Oscar for the previous film to attract viewers but it's out rather late with a 4th Jason Bourne and the Total Recall reboot out two weeks later to steal its audience. The Avengers doesn't have anything similar until M.I.B. 3 at the end of the month. Spiderman will certainly lose some to The Dark Knight Rises, but the long holiday weekend of its release might even things out; however another reboot to a franchise that's not that old could alienate a wider audience outside the comic fan base. It should also be noted that Pixar's Brave is out two weeks prior to Spiderman. This one is a wildcard.

I think it will be Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Amazing Spiderman when all things are said and done.

TDKR. Duh. Avengers will do Iron Man 1 numbers ONLY if it's good.

Spider-Man won't crack 200 domestic.

I'll be seeing all, but never doubt Batman.

Nice analysis of the months competition, i'm assuming that's the American release dates for those films. The landscape may be less competitive for the "foreign" money depending on their release dates, for example us Europeans aren't getting The Muppets movie until 10 February 2012! Although I have no doubt I have no doubt The Dark Knight Rises is going get the most money, its a toss up between the Avengers and Spider-man depending on their quality.

We say "Always be Batman" and GLHB for a reason. Besides do any of the other movies have Tom Hardy in a bondage mask and Anne Hathaway in a skin tight cat suit? I think not.
