With her new friends, Twilight Sparkle rushes into the Everfree Forest to find the Elements of Harmony so that they may stop Nightmare Moon.
On
the morning of the summer sun celebration, the village of Ponyville is rocked
by the appearance of Nightmare Moon: a fallen princess who, after escaping her
imprisonment in the moon, now seeks to bring eternal night to the land of
Equestria. With her sister, Princess Celestia, as her captive there is little
in the way of her plan to make sure that the land is shrouded in darkness
forever.
The
only one who knew of her inevitable return was a unicorn mage named Twilight
Sparkle: a student of Princess Celestia. She and her assistant, Spike, were
ordered to go to the village to supervise the celebration after the princess
showed concern for her need to constantly study. Also, she was ordered to use
the opportunity to make friends, something she neglected to do while in
Canterlot. Begrudgingly, Twilight followed orders, but was more concerned with
learning about the Elements of Harmony: a powerful magic that was used to
imprison Nightmare Moon, and the one hope to stop her once and for all.
Back
at her makeshift home, Ponyville's library, Twilight frantically starts going
through the all books to find more information on the Elements of Harmony.
Accompanying her is a group of locals who she had met throughout the day:
Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity. While Rainbow
initially accuses her of being a spy, the others convince her that she's on
their side... but she also knows too much about what's happening. Twilight
admits that she knew it would happen, but has no idea of who to stop the evil
unicorn. After Pinkie manages to find the needed book on the subject (It was
under "E") Twilight learns the Elements of Harmony are made up of 6
things: honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity, and loyalty. The final one,
which remains unknown, will show itself once the other five are brought
together. As she reads on, they learn that the elements are all located at an
ancient castle, located the depths of the unnatural Everfree Forest.
Twilight
sets out to find the elements, but she's not alone. The other girls have
decided to accompany her into the woods, still seeing her as a friend.
Twilight, however, is still not mutual. Nightmare Moon is not making it easy
though. Using her magic, she creates obstacles and takes different forms to
keep the girls from progressing.
First,
she collapses a cliff from under them, sending the flightless ponies sliding
down the cliffside. Applejack saves Twilight from falling over the edge, but
then asks her to let go. Applejack assures the stunned unicorn that she'll be
saved once she lets go. True to her word, Rainbow and Fluttershy save Twilight
from plummeting to her death.
Next,
Nightmare Moon unleashes the wrath of a Manticore, a ferocious beast of the
forest, on the girls. They try to fight it off, but to no avail. But then
Fluttershy calmly walks over to the beast and finds out that it was simply
another victim of Nightmare Moon, who had taken the form of a thorn and drove
herself into its paw. Fluttershy removes it and wins the creature's affection,
allowing the group to move on.
The
girls then find themselves in a dark part of the forest, surrounded by trees
that, being affected by Nightmare Moon's magic, now have monstrous faces that
scare the girls--keeping them from proceeding. But the one pony that is unaffected
is Pinkie Pie, who is actually laughing at the trees. She starts singing about
conquering one's fears through laughter, boosting the girl’s confidence and
then all laugh away the faces from the trees.
Finally,
they are tasked with crossing a river, which has become turbulent due to an
upset, and very flamboyant, sea serpent.... in a river. Nightmare Moon had passed through and
tore off half of his mustache, leaving the creature in hysterics. The only one
sympathetic to his plight is Rarity, who understands the importance of looking
fabulous. So using one of his scales, Rarity slices off her beautiful tail and
uses it to restore his mustache. This calms the down the serpent, who helps the
gang cross the river.
Now
the girls are a stone throw's away from the ruins, but are held back once more
due to the bridge being out. Rainbow Dash takes action, grabbing the fallen end
and tying it to the other side. But while she performs this task, Nightmare
Moon comes to her in the form of a dark aerial troupe named The Shadowbolts.
Using Rainbow's ego to their advantage, they ask her to join their group as a
captain. But there's a catch: she must leave the girls behind. Rainbow Dash,
displaying loyalty, turns down the offer and goes back to help her friends.
Finally
inside the ruins, Twilight has the girls bring down the five stone orbs that
she assumes are the Elements of Harmony. All she has to do now use her magic to
create a spark, which will reveal the final element. But Nightmare Moon
appears, envelops the two, and transports herself, Twilight and the five orbs,
to another part of the ruins. As the girls make their way to the location,
Twilight charges over to Nightmare Moon: who has the orbs at her feet.
Nightmare also charges at Twilight, but before they collide, Twilight teleports
over to the orbs and begins to use her magic. Nightmare Moon intervenes:
casting Twilight aside and then destroys the orbs.
From
behind, the girls make their way to Nightmare Moon's chamber and call out to
her with reassuring words. Suddenly, Twilight comes to a realization and,
confidently, tells the evil princess that she had not destroyed the Elements of
Harmony. In fact, the spirits of the Elements are right there: they are
Twilight Sparkle and her newfound friends. She explains that the events that
took place on the way there were all representative of each element. As for the
final one, it had been revealed through a different spark: it was the spark of
joy when she realized that the other five ponies were her friends. The final
element? Magic.
The
orbs turn into jewels, the six ponies begin to levitate and glow, and a rainbow
envelops them all. Once Twilight opens her eyes, the room is flooded with a
bright light. When it's all over, all the girls find that they are now wearing jewelry
that match their cutie marks. Soon after, Princess Celestia appears before the
girls. She explains that she knew all along that Nightmare Moon would return
and knew that Twilight had the ability to defeat her. This was why Celestia had
ordered her pupil to make friends, for it was key in unleashing her true
potential. Nearby, they see a blue winged unicorn that Celestia approaches. It
is Nightmare Moon, who has returned to her original form as Princess Luna:
Celestia's little sister. Celestia offers to put an end to their differences,
to which Luna emotionally accepts.
With the ordeal over, Pinkie Pie believes that this calls for one thing: a party. They all return to Ponyville, lead by a chariot carrying the two sisters. But for Twilight, this scene is bittersweet. Her mission accomplished, she's sad at the idea of returning to Canterlot, after having made such wonderful friends. So Celestia issues her a new mission. Now Twilight will remain in Ponyville where she will continue her studies on the magic of friendship; reporting her findings to the princess. Twilight promises to study even harder and is thrilled to be able to be with her new friends from now on.
