I know it's way too early to tell, but i thought it would be fun to discuss possible awards that Game of Thrones should be nominated for based on what we've seen.

Golden Globes
Best Supporting Actor in a Drama - Peter Dinklage for Tyrion Lannister, Kit Harrington for Jon Snow
Best Supporting Actress in a Drama -  Michelle Fairley for Catelyn Stark

Best Drama Series of course.

I'd be really surprised if Peter Dinklage didn't receive a nomination. He had such a deep character and he portrayed him so well.

Totally agree with all of those! I think the opening credits sequence should get nominated as well. In fact, HBO's submitted it as part of their Emmy submissions already. Here's the full list that they submitted for Emmy nominations:

  • Art direction: Winter is Coming (ep. 1), A Golden Crown (ep. 6), and Fire and Blood (ep. 10)
  • Costumes: The Pointy End (ep. 8)
  • Cinematography: Winter is Coming (ep. 1) by Alik Sakharov,Lord Snow (ep 2) by Marco Pontecorvo, The Pointy End (ep. 8) by Matthew Jensen
  • Directing: Winter is Coming (ep. 1) by Tim Van Patten, A Golden Crown (ep. 6) by Daniel Minahan, Baelor (ep. 9) by Alan Taylor
  • Editing: Winter is Coming (ep. 1) by Oral Norrie Ottey, A Golden Crown (ep. 6) by Marty Nicholson, Baelor (ep. 9) by Francesca Parker
  • Hairstyling: A Golden Crown (ep. 6) by Kevin Alexander and Candice Banks
  • Makeup (Non-Prosthetic): Winter is Coming (ep. 1) by Paul Engelen and Melissa Lackersteen
  • Prosthetic Makeup: A Golden Crown (ep. 6) by Paul Engelen and Conor O’Sullivan
  • Sound Editing: A Golden Crown (ep. 6)
  • Sound Mixing: A Golden Crown (ep. 6)
  • Stunts: The Wolf and the Lion (ep. 5)
  • Writing: Baelor (ep. 9) by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
  • Best Drama
  • Best Casting
  • Best Main Title Design
    • Drama Lead Actor: Sean Bean
    • Drama Lead Actress: Lena Headey
    • Drama Supporting Actor: Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, Aiden Gillen, Kit Harington, and Jason Momoa
    • Drama Supporting Actress: Emilia Clarke and Michelle Fairley

The actual nominations won't be made until July 14th or so. Source

They've also racked up four Television Critics Association award nominations (Source) and a nomination for Best Drama in some new Critics Choice awards (Source). I think they'll do pretty well come awards season!

    No Maisie Williams submission?

Anyways, I figure that they'll do well for themselves this awards season. GoT is a mighty fine show and it looks like they've put a lot of time and effort into making it so.

(and yeah if Peter Dinklage doesn't get a nomination something is terribly, terribly wrong)

I was surprised by that too. It probably has something to do with her age maybe? No clue.

Nice to see some love go out for the Dink.

Peter Dinklage is pretty much guaranteed to get a supporting actor nomination, and I think he has a good shot at winning. He steals every scene he's in, and you don't need to even watch the show to understand why he's so great. I mean, how can anyone not love this:

The last episode had some brilliant scenes with him as well, particularly the Tysha speech and the meal with Tywin. As for Best Drama, it'll be tough for a genre show, particularly one as dense as this one, to beat out the more traditional fare. Mad Men of course seems to be a favorite among the Emmy voters, but as much as I loved season four, I could see this being the year that it gets knocked off the pedestal. And with no Breaking Bad this year, Game of Thrones would only really have to contend with Boardwalk Empire and The Good Wife.

I kinda want Jason Momoa to win for best supporting actor, if anyone. Dinklage kind of had it easy, Martin wrote the best lines for him and Bronn because those guys are supposed to be surrogates for himself. Momoa had to learn a made up language and really sell the fact that he's the baddest warrior around.
I think since Mad Men's on haitis, even though nobody even goddamn watches the show (or perhaps because) it'll still take a few trophies home. This seems like Boardwalk Empire's year, too. It really came around last season. I think it'll win a lot of technical awards and probably get snubbed a bit in the more general categories.

If The Wire can't win at the Emmy's, then I don't hold out hope for anything.

Now that I think about it - You're right, Jason Momoa did an EXCELLENT job as Khal Drogo. The scene when he promises to march on King's Landing stole my breath away. He was really powerful.

And as much as I'd like to see Sean Bean be nominated for Best Actor in a Drama - I felt his character was kind of one dimensional.

Eddard and Jon Snow fill the role of your hero types. By necessity they can't have too many flaws, because they're the moral paradigms for the show; they have the correct opinions and they do what you hope you'd do for any given situation. And flawed characters are always going to be more interesting than morally infallible people.

@ryanwho: You're right. It's a necessary nuisance most of the time, but you need an anchor, I suppose.

I get the feeling that Game of Thrones is at least going to get nominations in just about every major category at the Emmys this year. Upon going to a Variety article linked here at Screened I was greeted by a giant banner of "For Your Consideration" listing all the actors and what they want them nominated for. I can however see this going like Lord of the Rings did where the voters kind of have to let it warm up for awhile before they can't deny it's greatness and give it just about everything one year.

Dinklage has to be a shoe-in. He owns every moment he's in.

    In the season finale...

...when his father says "You're my son..." the subtlety and power of Dinklage's reaction is a masterclass in film acting.

I don't think of any other TV show that is as good as Game of Thrones, to be honest I think it's better than most of the movies that came out in the last few years. I can't really think of an award it doesn't have a good chance or doesn't deserve winning, aside from from best kiss which will go to Twilight.

A lot of technical awards, about like I figured. And like someone else said, I think it'll be a more known quantity for season 2 and more proper nominations will come about. Not to say the technical stuff doesn't matter but.... yeah.
