Is this something I didn't notice in the first book or was this part only in the show?

@H2Oyea:  It is extremely hard to notice in the books if you ask me. Mainly because of the point of view method of story telling, you only get hints through what people mention. I never noticed it myself, I actually heard they were making it more obvious in the show, so I went and reread the first two books, and it is indeed there in veiled mentions of the characters. I read an interview with George R.R. Martin where he said he thought he made it obvious in the books, but my guess is that he just knew they were since he's the author, and it's much more subtle than he thought.

EDIT: Actually, here't the article where I first learned of it:  http://www.afterelton.com/tv/2011/01/gays-game-of-thrones-series-george-martin

I  never noticed this in the books, but apparently it's been common knowledge for some time.

You guys read those right? Totally gay, Loras's sister swings both ways as well...

It's never stated outright, but there are so many comments about it in the books that it's pretty obvious if you're paying attention, especially in Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords.

Yeah, it's not really present in the first couple of books, but by book 3 and 4 it's strongly implied.

You know, I was quite surprised by that scene myself.  I read the books and never picked up on them being gay.  I mean, yeah sure, Renly was flamboyant, but gay?  I guess I was just blind about it.

I'm also disappointed in the actor chosen to play Loras.  The way he was described in the books, he was supposed to be sooo good looking that all girls and young women swooned for him.  This Loras barely looks out of puberty.

Women are kind of into that these days.

@ryanwho: Um, no?  Maybe I'm just not old enough to be a cougar.  In which case, that's a good thing.

I have yet to see a single episode of the TV show, but I am currently reading the second book, Clash of Kings, and there it was! straight from the mouth of Stannis himself. You guys are right, it was subtle, but it seems to be GRRM's style (which I think is brilliant!). After reading that part, you get to wondering what Stannis meant, then you go back to other entries and realize that there is something there (like during the wedding feast, with Renly paying attention to Loras). The first book gave me no hint at all, but the second one, with Stannis' words, got me thinking. And then I found this forum.

After reading the first book (Game of Thrones), I became more careful in reading every line of the second book. I realized that GRRM is not actually putting "twists" on the story, most "twists" were already revealed early on, it's just that I needed to pay attention even to the most seemingly innocent lines. He tells everything, I just needed to pay attention. Totally, totally enjoyed the books! I hope they didn't butcher it in the TV show :-)

I think most people are surprised because Martin was much more circumspect with that relationship than any of the others.  Any other relationship we get thrust by thrust accounts if you will.
