Considered an outsider actor when he began his career in the 1960s, Gene Hackman distinguished himself early on with an Oscar-winning performance as detective Popeye Doyle in The French Connection. Hackman's success continued in later roles, particularly those in The Conversation, Superman, Unforgiven and Crimson Tide. He has won two oscars.
