After last week's middling season debut, Glee came back in a big way last night with its much-talked-about Britney Spears episode. The fact that Britney herself was slated to be in on the episode (albeit in limited cameos) had me all aflutter with wonderings regarding how they would make all this Britney music fit. As it happens, it mostly revolved around various members of the New Directions getting gassed in the face and having elaborate Britney Spears fantasies.
But let me back up for a moment. The crux of the episode centered on Matthew Morrison's Mr. Schuster still pining after his lost love, Jayma Mays' prissy redhead, Emma Pillsbury. She has, as you may recall, fallen in with John Stamos' absurdly rugged and handsome dentist, Dr. Howell. After getting lambasted by the Glee clubbers for wanting to inflict the likes of Christopher Cross on them (which, by the way, ain't a damn thing wrong with Christopher Cross), Kurt makes the radical suggestion of doing a Britney number for the upcoming Homecoming pep rally. Schuster wants nothing to do with it, which gets him labeled as "uptight" by pretty much everyone around him.
Hilarious antics ensue, Stamos arrives on the scene, and has some of the clubbers with less-than-stellar dental work come in for some handsome dentistry, and with each gassing of a kid, we find ourselves with a new Britney number, each modeled after the respective music video.
It's a toss-up between which one was my ultimate favorite, but I think it probably has to go to Artie's rendition of "Stronger," which was simultaneously hilarious and just slightly uncomfortable. I also appreciated the abundance of Heather Morris' Brittany in this episode, especially when it was revealed her name is Brittany S. Pierce. Brittany SPierce. Yeah. Anyway, she got two Britney numbers, including a solo run on "I'm a Slave 4 U" and a duet with Naya Rivera on "Me Against the Music." I always enjoy Morris' dead-eyed stupidity on the show, but it was cool to see her get front and center and actually remind us that she's a pretty goddamn solid dancer, to boot.
And yes, of course, Lea Michele's rendition of "Baby One More Time" was every bit the delight you'd expect it to be (the girl does the Britney "sadface" from that video eerily well) and the Homecoming rendition of "Toxic" was pretty good, mostly for the fact that Schuster happened to take part in the performance. That said, the episode did have its faults. I was a little put off by how quickly the story shifted Finn back onto the football team, Kurt's endless whining about wanting to do Britney actually made me want to slap the living shit out of him, and there was a distinct lack of Sue Sylvester in this episode--though her one extended diatribe to Schuster was damn near priceless.
Still, few issues aside, this was a really excellent episode all around, and was exactly the upbeat kick in the pants the show needed after last week's premiere. I'm a little sketchy on next week's episode, since it looks like it could be one of those colossally depressing ones (and the potential abundance of Jesus-related music seems...troubling), but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
What did you guys think of last night's episode? Was Britney back, bitch?
