Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is the 18th movie of the Godzilla franchise, and the 3rd movie in the Heisei series.
The morning after a UFO is seen in the sky over Tokyo, Kenichiro Terasawa, a sci-fi writer for "Super Mystery Magazine", turns down the offer to write about. Instead, he follows a story about a man who claims he saw a dinosaur during World War II. He claims that in 1944, a dinosaur killed a troop of U.S. soldiers who were attacking the island, saving the life of the Japanese soldiers garrisoning the island. Kenichiro follows up the story, and discovers that the island that the old man saw the dinosaur on was used for a test site for atomic weapons. As such, Kenichiro believes that the dinosaur became Godzilla.
Meanwhile, the government investigation into the UFO has confirmed that it was neither an airplane or a meteor. The UFO was also confirmed to be hovering over the area where Godzilla has been sleeping for years. A pair of Army helicopters find the UFO, but are shot down. Ground troops move in and secure the area.
Kenichiro continues to follow up the story, and discovers that a Yasuaki Shindo, a wealthy business man, was the commander of the garrison on the island the dinosaur was seen on. Terasawa interviews Shindo, whom reluctantly gives him photos of the dinosaur he took during the battle.
As the army surrounds the UFO, the crew members of the UFO, among them Emmy Kano, reveal themselves via hologram, and claim they are from the 23 century. The people from the future claim that soon, Godzilla will awaken, and the monster will destroy Japan by destroying the country's nuclear power plants, covering the land with radiation. Emmy gives the prime minister a book, which was written by Terasawa, and he is called in by the security council. The book proves that Terasawa's theory about the origin of Godzilla is correct. The Futurians plan to go to the past, move the dinosaur from the island before the bomb tests, and bring it back to the present, to prevent it from becoming Godzilla. They have requested that Terasawa, a dinosaur expert named Mazaki, and that Miki Saegusa, a psychic who works for the ESP Institute, to go along. The Futurians send Emmy, a human-looking android named M-11, and three bio-engineered animals called dorats.
The team travels back in a smaller ship, and arrive on the island in the past. The witness the battle between the Japanese garrison and the American soldiers, and see the dinosaur attack the Americans. The creature drives the Americans back to the beach, where it slaughters the American forces, but is mortally wounded by fire from American battleships. The time travels go forward in time to when the Japanese garrison leaves the island. The Japanese soldiers pay tribute to the wounded creature before they leave the island. Once the garrison leaves, the time travelers transport the dinosaur onto the ocean floor of the present. Emmy secretly releases the dorats on the island before the group returns to the present. Upon their return to the future, they find that Godzilla has disappeared, but that a new monster, King Ghidorah, rose in his place.
King Ghidorah attacks Japan, laying waste to a city. Miki senses that King Ghidorah was created from the dorats that were left behind, and that Ghidorah was created by the same atomic bomb that originally created Godzilla. It turns out that the Futurians created Ghidorah, and can control the monster. They plan to destroy all of Japan, and then rebuild it as they see fit. Emmy feels that her comrades are going to far, and leaves the Futurian ship. She goes to Terasawa's apartment, and tells him the truth: her and her comrades are part of a radical organization which believes that all nations should be equal from the future that stole the time machine, and that they made up the story about Godzilla destroying Japan. Their real purpose was to stop Japan from becoming a world mega-power in the upcoming centuries.
The Japanese government, powerless against King Ghidorah, comes up with a desperate plan: they plan to use a secret nuclear submarine to irradiate the dinosaur, now lying underneath the ocean, in the hopes of creating a new Godzilla to combat King Ghidorah. However, it appears that a new Godzilla was already created as the result of a nuclear submarine accident in the Bering Sea, and the submarine is attacked by Godzilla. The additional radiation makes Godzilla even bigger and stronger than before.
Terasawa and Emmy are attacked my M-11, whom takes Emmy back to the Futurian ship. She convinces the other Futurians that the Japanese have no way to fight back. When they accept her back, she reprograms M-11 so that the android will help her. M-11 brings Terasawa to the Futurian ship.
King Ghidorah, under the Futurian's control, continues the attack on Japan, despite the best efforts of the military, until the reborn Godzilla makes landfall. The Futurians send King Ghidorah against Godzilla, and the two monsters fight. As the battle rages, Terasawa, Emmy, and M-11 sabotage the Futurian ship, breaking their control on King Ghidorah, and stunning the monster, allowing Godzilla to turn the tide against Ghidorah. Terasawa, Emmy, and M-11 take the ship, but the Futurian's victory is already assured: even if King Ghidorah is loses, the new, more powerful Godzilla will destroy Japan instead. The vessel is set to return to the future, and Terasaw, M-11, and Emmy escape in the smaller ship, and sure the small ship's teleport beam to teleport the vessel into the battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah, where it is destroyed by Godzilla before it can return to the future. Godzilla defeats King Ghidorah, decapitating it's middle head, and the body King Ghidorah falls into the sea.
With King Ghidorah destroyed, Godzilla turns his attention on a nearby city, where he devastates the city and its defenders. Emmy and M-11 go back to the future, planning to revive King Ghidorah and to bring it back to fight Godzilla. They suceed, and revive Ghidorah as Mecha-King Ghidorah, and return as Godzilla is rampaging through Tokyo. WIth Emmy and M-11's processor controlling Mecha-King Ghidorah, the cyborg monster attacks Godzilla. Despite taking heavy damage in the battle, Mecha-King Ghidorah manages to carry Godzilla out to sea before it is destroyed. Emmy and M-11 escape, and return to the future.
However, despite the best efforts of modern and future man, Godzilla is still alive.
