The main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise. He is a Saiyan warrior who was raised on Earth and loves to fight.
A saiyan from the planet Vegeta who was sent to Earth as a small child in hopes of destroying the planet. As an infant Goku was discovered by Grandpa Gohan who raised Goku and removed his monkey-like tail, which turns out to have protected Earth. Goku grows up learning martial arts and showing an affinity for power and often time exceeds the power limits of the Earthlings around him.
Goku is the main character throughout all Dragon Ball series. In Dragon Ball, Goku grows up from a small kid into an adult as he saves the world, collects Dragonballs, and competes in the world martial arts tournament. In Dragon Ball Z we rejoin Goku after he has started a family with Chi Chi as his wife a newly born Gohan as his son. We follow Goku as he discovers his true past from another planet and raises Gohan to even surpass him in fighting ability. Goku would also turn into Super Saiyan and help his fellow Saiyan fighters achieve the same to help save the world from a series of threats against Earth.
Finally in the last chapter in the saga was Goku in Dragon Ball GT where Goku is wished back into his kid form and again but save the world multiple times. He achieves even stronger forms of Super Saiyan (form 4) and faces some of his old enemies in a form of the afterlife. Goku lives on with Shenron after saving the world one final time setting peace across Earth but keeping watch over his descendants.
Goku first appears in the anime Dragon Ball at the age of about 12 having been raised by his grandpa Gohan. As Goku is on his way home with a fish he caught he is hit by a car and attacked by its driver. The driver becomes scared when she realizes the gun she fired at him did little to no damage to Goku. Goku and the girl, Bulma quickly form a friendship and Goku explains that his grandpa died and left him alone with only his power pole and a dragonball.
Goku leads Bulma to his home where she decides to invite Goku along with her since she is out looking for the very dragonballs Goku has. But Goku only has one out of seven, and the other six are needed in order to summon a mighty dragon. Bulma takes Goku to her home sharing with him the technology of the world to which Goku is new to and amazed by.
The next morning Goku meets a turtle, named Turtle, who leads him to the ocean where Goku and Bulma are taken to an island. On the island they find an old hermit who's friend is Turtle named Master Roshi. Roshi befriends the two and decides to give Goku a gift, which also helps him get back to land and his island should he want to return, the Nimbus Cloud. Bulma also leaves with a gift, three more dragonballs from Roshi in exchange for a quick flash.
The two move on defeating problems, collecting dragonballs, and even making friends who begin to join them on their journey. In one village Goku defeats Oolong, a shape shifter kidnapping woman. In a desert they run into Yamcha, a bandit, who Goku nearly loses to thanks to hunger, who begins to stalk them before eventually joining them in their quest. Finally though, the group is able to collect all seven balls needed.
This eventually leads to the discovery of Emperor Pilaf, a man who has stolen all seven balls, having the final one himself, and summons the dragon Shenron. Just as Pilaf is about to wish for the power to rule over Earth, Oolong interrupts and wishes for a pair of panties. Stopped but still captured Goku is kept in a small prison cell with an open ceiling to the sky. That evening, during a full moon, Goku transforms into a Giant Ape like creature and begins attacking Pilaf's fortress. Yamcha is able to stop Goku's rampage by grabbing his tale and his friends begin to think he may not be human.
Goku had accomplished what he and Bulma had set out to do and now returned to Master Roshi whom he promised he would train with. Goku won't be training alone though and teams up with Krillin to find a woman that will please Roshi so that he will train them, Launch, who just so happens has a split personality. Roshi's training isn't typical martial arts training but does begin to build up stamina and strength within the two despite the oddness.
After about eight months of training with Roshi the two are ready to ender the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. Both Goku and Krillin are entered and Goku has all of his friend's cheering him on. Goku manages his way through the tournament with relative ease and has made quite an increase in his power through Roshi's training. In the final round he takes on Jackie Chun who is really Roshi in disguise. Despite transforming again in the middle of the battle Goku only barely loses to Chun. Goku takes away the knowledge that no matter how strong he is there could always be someone else out there who is stronger and Goku should never stop training for such a day.
With the tournament over Master Roshi tells Goku to go and explore the world giving Goku the chance to seek out his four star dragonball originally given to him by his grandpa. In his search Goku has more run ins with his old foe Emporer Pilaf who appears to have the four star dragonball as well as the Red Ribbon Army. His frequent run ins with the Red Ribbon Army soon makes them his constant adversary and he is joined again by Bulma and begins searching for the dragonballs in hopes of finding his own. During a pitched battle against a hired assassin, hired by the Red Ribbon Army, Goku loses and has a friend met along the way die as the assassins hand.
After such an event Goku decides to make it up to the friend's father by locating all of the dragonballs and wishing him back as well as defeating the entire Red Ribbon Army. Goku hunts down their secret hideout and is able to defeat every member before any of his friends can arrive to back him up.
With the army defeated Goku only needs one more dragonball to make a wish but can't seem to find it even while using the dragon radar. Roshi suggests Goku should visit his sister Baba, a fortuneteller and soothsayer. Baba refuses to help Goku and his friends out unless they can defeat 5 of her own fighters. It falls to Goku alone to defeat the final warrior himself, someone who feels very familiar to Goku. After defeating the masked fighter it is revealed to be Grandpa Gohan who had been brought from Other World to fight and reunite with Goku.
Baba informs Goku that the final dragonball is in a protective case with Emperor Pilaf. After defeating Pilaf for another time he is able to make his wish, making sure to hold on to the four star ball this time before it can scatter. Goku now returns to Roshi to begin another round of training for the next World Martial Arts Tournament.
In the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament starts out just as he did in the year's previous tournament, easily defeating his opponents. Only until he faces Krillin, his friend and fellow Roshi trainee, in the semifinals do the battles get difficult. After only barely beating Krillin he moves on to face Tien. Tien has been trained by Roshi's training rival, Master Shen and throughout the match Goku is effected by telekinesis from Chiaotzu, another disciple in the crowd helping Shen.
Tien and Goku's battle gets dangerous when Tien uses an energy technique to destroy the tournaments stage. Goku uses his own energy technique to counterattack against Tien but the two are sent falling to the ground with Goku hitting first, making Tien the winner and Goku runner-up once again.
With the tournament done with the evil King Piccolo takes his chance to reveal himself. As Goku is returning to the tournament space to retrieve his things he spots one of Piccolo's minions having just killed Krillin. Goku tries to stop the monster but is still fatigued and ends up falling into woods below. As Goku scrounges for food he meets Yajirobe who just so happens has a dragonball which he has defended from more of Piccolo's minions. Piccolo is able to sense his minions falling to Yajirobe and Goku's attacks and arrives himself to take the dragonball. Goku puts up a fight but Piccolo is holding back before hitting Goku with his full strength temporarily stopping Goku's heart.
Goku is taken to Korin Tower while his friends try to stop King Piccolo from gathering up all the dragonballs, but Piccolo ends up killing Roshi and Chiaotzu in the process. Piccolo is now able to summon Shenron and wishes for his youth and power restored making him stronger than before. Piccolo then destroys Shenron and begins his plans to take over the entire world.
Finally Goku is able to recover from his injuries and seeks out a special water that either empowers the drinker, or kills them. Having survived and now much stronger Goku hunts down Piccolo's palace and arrives in time to save Tien from another of Piccolo's minions. Goku moves on to attack Piccolo himself with the two at even power levels. Piccolo takes Tien as a hostage which nearly doesn't stop Goku since Goku assumes he could revive Tien via the dragonballs.
Piccolo reveals Shenron's death at his hands which stops Goku in his tracks. Piccolo attacks once again leaving Goku with several broken limbs As Piccolo rises in the air to deliver his final killing attack Goku gets enraged at all the horrible things Piccolo has inflicted onto Earth and flies up into the air. Goku's attack goes right through Piccolo, creating a hole in his stomach, killing Piccolo. As Piccolo dies he spits out an egg, another form of himself that he claims will do his bidding and take over Earth for him.
With King Piccolo dead Goku heads to Korin Tower where he learns about Kami's Lookout. Kami's Lookout houses Kami, the person who created the Dragonballs and Shenron and might be able to help Goku make a wish to bring back those killed by King Piccolo. Atop Kami's Lookout Goku finds Mr. Popo, Kami's assistant, who gives Goku a quick test before allowing him to meet Kami. Kami reveals himself to be the Dragonballs and Shenron's creator as well as the guardian of Earth. He reactivates the Dragonballs and brings them together allowing Shenron to resurrect all those killed during King Piccolo's rein.
Kami's assistance comes with a catch, that Goku must train with Kami and Popo in order to enter the next World Martial Arts Tournament and defeat Piccolo Jr., the spawn of King Piccolo. The training consists of fighting Popo, self discovery, and meditation all which makes Goku a stronger fighter. Kami even permanently removes Goku's tail so he won't ever transform into a Giant Ape ever again and Shenron grants a wish to return the destroyed moon.
After nearly three years Goku returns from Kami's Lookout and meets up with his friends and enters the tournament. Goku again advances rather easily through the tournament beating even Tien, who beat him in the last tournament Goku had entered. Finally Goku reaches the finals to face off against Piccolo Jr. who had just trapped Kami in a small bottle through energy and ate the bottle. Now if Goku kills Piccolo he may accidentally kill Kami as well.
The fight begins and Goku is able to antagonize him to transform into a huge form of himself allowing Goku to fly inside him and rescue Kami. As the fight goes on at full force the ring around them is destroyed and the onlookers flee when they learn where Piccolo Jr. had come from. During the battle Goku has a hole blown into his shoulder and nearly kills Goku before Goku is able to use the last of his energy to head-butt Piccolo Jr. in the stomach and win the match, discovering how to fly in the process.
Goku allows Piccolo to live because he is essentially a good person and would make a decent training partner for him. Goku moves on from the tournament and marries Chi-Chi, a fighter from the tournament he faced and a villager whom he saved years before. Goku and Chi-Chi move on to start a new life and ends the Dragon Ball series.
Saiyan Saga:
Taking place about five years after the end of Dragon Ball we rejoin with Goku after he has built a home and family with his wife Chi-Chi and young son Gohan. Goku decides to take his young son and finally introduce him to all his friend at Roshi's home. As the group are celebrating a mini reunion Goku senses something very wrong off in the distance, a huge source of power. This new power comes from outer space and finds Goky, claims to be his older brother, and tells him all about Goku's origins.
Goku is a saiyan warrior born on another planet and sent to Earth to kill everyone who lived there. The newcomer, named Raditz, summarizes something must have gone wrong and erased Goku's memory of his mission or his home while crashing onto Earth's surface. Raditz informs his brother that he must complete his original intended mission within a day or he will do it himself.
Piccolo and Goku decide to team up and go off to find Raditz who has kidnapped Gohan and locked him in Raditz's spacepod. When Raditz refuses to let Gohan go Goku and Piccolo attack but are unable to overcome the newcomer. The events end up angering Gohan who gets so upset that an inner power deep inside him is unleashed which catches Raditz off guard and weakens him, giving Goku and Piccolo the chance to come up with a plan to stop Raditz.
Goku is able to sneak behind Raditz and put him into a hold he can't break free of, allowing Piccolo to use his special beam cannon, a powerful energy move, that ends up killing Raditz but also sacrificing Goku. As Raditz is dying he confesses that he isn't the last and two more stronger warriors, named Vegeta and Nappa, are coming to Earth and will arrive is about one year's time.
Despite passing away in his friend's arms Goku is guided into other world, a place similar to the afterlife, by Kami where he is informed to follow the lengthy snake way to King Kai's planet for training. This new training from King Kai will help Goku once he returns from the afterlife and become strong enough to face the new saiyans on their way to Earth.
After finally getting to King Kai's planet and is given a series training challenges that seem more like jokes rather than a rigorous training regiment. Initially the tasks seem rather easy but King Kai's planet has much higher gravity than Earth's which makes the tasks much more difficult. After completing his training his friends finally gather the dragonballs together and wish Goku back. Unfortunately Goku can't return unless he travels back along snake way. This delays Goku by nearly two days as his friends begin the fight against the new set of saiyan fighters.
Finally arriving to the battle late Goku discovers his friends Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, Piccolo, and Kami have all already been killed by Nappa and the resulting battle with the new saiyans. Despite the sadness Goku's new training has made him much more powerful than Nappa and he is able to easily dispatch and kill Nappa. Next up is the waiting Vegeta who is much more evenly matched to Goku's strength. Vegeta isn't strong enough however, thanks also the some help from Goku's friends, and Goku is able to beat him.
Krillin moves to kill Vegeat but Goku stops him before he can, giving Vegeta a second chance at life and to redeem himself. With the battle over Goku heads to a hospital with wife Chi-Chi to recover from his injuries and his friends plan to head to the planet Namek. Without Kami alive the dragonballs on Earth have become inert and on Namek more of Kami's kind can be found as well as another set of dragonballs that could be used to revive those lost to Nappa. A few weeks after leaving Goku is given a new batch of the healing sensu beans which allows him to head to planet Namek and join his friends.
Frieza Saga:
While traveling to Namek Goku uses his spaceship's artificial gravity device to turn the gravity up in order to help his training to fight the evil Frieza. Frieza is an alien who has also arrived on Namek in order to use Namek's dragonballs to wish to become immortal and thus take a big step to rule over the universe. King Kai even warns Goku that Frieza is one of the strongest beings and even with more training Goku won't be able to beat Frieza.
Goku finally gets to Namek with battles among his friends and Frieza's minions already begun. He finds Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan all losing badly to Recoome, a member of Frieza's elite force, the Ginyu Force. Goku attacks and is able easily defeat Recoome and two others of the Ginyu Force with relative ease before giving his friends senzu beans which heal them completely. Goku then takes on the leader of the Ginyu Force, Ginyu.
Ginyu quickly realizes that Goku is much stronger than himself and uses a technique to switch bodies with him. Vegeta steps in and critically injuries Goku's body giving Goku, in Ginyu's body, a chance to fool Ginyu into switching bodies with a frog and giving Goku his body back. despite beating the Ginyu Force, Goku is badly injured and retreats to Frieza's spaceship which has a medical machine inside it allowing him to heal himself in a few horus. This again puts his friend's in danger as they fight against Frieza.
Goku finally emerges and begins his battle Frieza and despite Goku's new found strength through training Frieza doesn't seemed phased by anything thrown at him. It isn't until Goku's friend Krillin is killed and Piccolo is severely injured that Goku gets angry enough to let more of his power out. This anger and power turns Goku into a super saiyan, a more powerful version of the ordinary saiyan with blonde hair. Frieza panics seeing Goku turn realizing that his new power is enough to kill Frieza with.
Frieza fires two shots of energy at Goku but Goku maneuvers around and even after a warning Frieza ignores Goku as his own disks cut Frieza's body. Frieza is weak and dying and begins to beg for mercy and help from Goku. Goku decides to give Frieza some of his own energy to they both could escape Namek since the heated battle has started the planet to slowly explode. Frieza takes his new energy and fires an energy blast at Goku while his back is turned. Goku dodges the attack and uses his Kamehameha at Frieza, finally killing the powerful tyrant.
Goku escapes the planet using one of the Ginyu Force's pods which accidentally takes him to the next planet on Ginyu's attack list. While his friend's work to resurrect Goku, since they think he died on Namek because he never returned, they learn the truth of his whereabouts and wait for his return. Goku's friends are revived thanks in part to the Namek and Earth dragonballs and they wait for Goku to return. While on the strange planet Goku learns a technique called instant transmission which allows him to travel, instantly, anywhere in the universe as long as he can picture the place.
Android Saga:
After being gone for nearly two years Goku finally decides to return to Earth. When he arrives he is greeted by a saiyan he has never met before, Trunks. Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma but from the future. Trunks decides to have Goku prove his power and attacks with Goku easily warding off Trunks assault. Happy with Goku's power level Trunks tells him about the time he comes from and its dire state, and why he has come to the past.
In Trunks time the world has been decimated by two androids who were strong enough to kill several of Trunk's friends. There is little hope since future Goku died from a heart disease well before the androids arrived. Luckily Trunks gives present Goku medicine that will treat his disease in three years time when the androids first attack. For the next three years Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo all spend the majority of their time training for the new threat coming but what doesn't come is Goku's disease.
Three years after Trunks warning it begins to come true and two androids attack, Android 19 and 20, who is really Dr. Gero a villain from Goku's past. Goku and his friends lead the two androids away from the city they have been attacking to avoid any collateral deaths to innocent civilians. Even at full strength Goku has trouble with Android 19 who has the ability to steal energy from his opponent through his hands. This sneaky tactic weakens Goku and accelerates his heart disease. As Goku goes down Vegeta steps in, now also a super saiyan, and destroys Android 19.
Yamcha takes Goku back to his home and Chi-Chi begins giving him the medicine to battle his disease. The rest of the fighters prepare to take on Dr. Gero when Trunks returns and informs then that the androids they have been battling aren't the two androids from Trunk's timeline. After following Dr. Gero back to his lab he reveals that he is about to unleash the hibernating Androids 17 and 18, the same androids that haunt Trunk's world. Despite trying to stop him Gero awakens his creations, which kill him on the spot and activate another Android, 16, who's entire existence is to kill Goku.
Cell Saga:
The new Androids are much more powerful than the first set and quickly run through Goku's friends before leaving to wreak havoc on Earth. Meanwhile Piccolo begins searching through the remains of Dr. Gero's lab discovering another creation he made called Cell. Cell is another android made from DNA of all the fighters Goku has ever encountered. Cell is also designed to absorb Androids 17 and 18 in order to transform into a more perfect, and powerful, form. Unfortunately for the Earth, Cell is already on the loose absorbing humans to become more powerful and is on the hunt for the two androids.
Shortly after Cell is able to absorb Android 17 and turn into his second form, Goku finally fully recovers from his disease and gathers Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunks and takes them to Kami's Lookout. There they plan to spend one day in a hyperbolic time chamber training which would feel like a year of time to those who enter. Vegeta and Trunks enter first before heading off to take on Cell with much higher power levels.
Goku and Gohan enter the time chamber, Goku has a plan to let Gohan become a super saiyan since he learned from Trunks that even half saiyans can transform. This potential unleashes more power in Gohan that Goku senses and in fact Gohan may be able to surpass Goku's powers and may be able to defeat Cell. While Goku and Gohan are busy training Vegeta and Trunks take on Cell. Their new power is a beefed up form of super saiyan but is only just enough to overcome Cell. With Cell on the ropes he antagonizes Vegeta into letting him absorb Android 18 and become "perfect" and more powerful. This new power is too much for Vegeta and Trunks and now perfect Cell leaves and announces the Cell games.
Just before Goku and Gohan emerge from the time chamber a tournament is set up by Cell, the entire Earth on one team versus Cell. If Cell is able to defeat every Earth warrior, he will destroy the planet. Goku doesn't seem very worried about the upcoming battle and takes the ten days to enjoy a few days off to relax with his friends and family.
Finally the day of the Cell games have arrived and after watching the wrestler Mr. Satan take on Cell, and is easily defeated, its up to Goku to take on Cell. Cell and Goku are evenly matched in almost every way and even gets the drop on Cell destroying half his body. Cell, however, has regeneration abilities and withstands all of Goku's attacks easily. After wearing Cell down and forcing Cell to raise himself to full power Goku decides thats enough and name's his son Gohan as the only other warrior strong enough to take Cell on. Goku even goes so far as to give Cell a senzu bean so the two can have a fair fight.
Goku watches on as his son begins his battle with Cell but without using his full power. When Cell grows curious about Gohan's power he listens to Gohan's tales from the past and how Gohan only let his power out when he was truly angry. Cell decides that he must see Gohan at his peak power and kills Android 16 before moving on to attacking Gohan's friends. 16's death finally triggers Gohan's anger and he turns into a super sainyan 2, a more powerful version of the super saiyan. This onslaught of power overwhelms Cell instantly and he is even forced to un-absorb Android 18 and turn back into his imperfect form.
Cell panics and begins a self destruct technique hoping to take Gohan and all of Earth with him. Goku realizes what needs to be done in order to save his son and his home. Goku uses his instant teleportation technique and takes Cell to King Kai's planet where Cell explodes killing Goku and King Kai.
With Goku dead it seems that Cell has been defeated but some of his cells remain, meaning Cell can regenerate. Cell forms back into himself and is back into his perfect form, this time even more powerful than before. Gohan and Cell begin their battle again locking into two kamehameha blasts. Gohan seems unable to overcome Cell but with Goku contacting him from other world and his friend's doing their best to attack Cell from behind Gohan is able to destroy Cell once and for all.
Other World Saga:
The fighters regroup at Kami's Lookout with the new guardian of Earth Dende, Kami fused with Piccolo in hopes to help fight Cell, readying the dragonballs. There they use one wish to revive all those killed by Cell but Goku can't be among them since he was already wished back to life once before. Goku contacts his friends telling them to let him stay in other world since he seems to attract so much trouble and evil. Everyone says their goodbyes and Goku begins to focus on training with all the old fighting masters in other world.
In the other world Goku is told to head to see the Grand Kai on his planet and enter the Other World Tournament, a martial arts tournament similar to the one held on Earth. The winner of the tournament would receive training sessions from the Grand Kai. As King Kai and Goku arrive at the tournament they are greeted by West Kai, a rival to King Kai, who has brought his own fighter named Pikkon. Pikkon is about to head to hell where he is instructed to stop dead villains Frieza, King Cold, Ginyu Force, and Cell from destroying that realm. Goku decides to go along with Pikkon thinking he might need help but is surprised when Pikkon easily beats Cell and Frieza by himself.
Pikkon and Goku return ready to enter the tournament finally and Goku breezes through the and ends up facing Pikkon in the tournament finals. Goku and Pikkon are pretty even, when Goku stays in non super saiyan mode, but neither give up and both end up being disqualified which means both will be trained by Grand Kai. For seven years Goku trains heavily in other world and surpasses even the super saiyan 2 level and going to super saiyan 3, a more powerful and power consuming form of the super saiyan form.
Buu Saga:
After so much time spent in other world Goku is given a chance to return to Earth in his body to enter the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. At the tournament Goku meets his friends once again including his youngest son who he never had a chance to meet, Goten. As Goku goes through this tournament easily, waiting for his eventual match with Vegeta, he has to postpone his fight after Videl, Gohan's girlfriend and Mr. Satan's daughter, is beaten badly by another fighter. This other fighter, as well as a few others, are empowered and controlled by an evil wizard named Babidi.
As Gohan begins his round facing Kibito, assistant to Supreme Kai who is in the tournament, his energy is stolen by Babidi's fighters. Goku and his friends leave the tournament in order to follow the fighters to see what exactly is going on. Supreme Kai reveals who he is and reveals that Babidi is trying to gather energy to summon a powerful monster. They follow the fighters into Babidi's ship where Krillin and Piccolo are turned into stone and the fighters attacked by Dabura, the ruler of the demon realm and who is helping Babidi.
Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Supreme Kai go room by room through Babidi's ship taking out several traps and monsters. As Goku finally takes on Dabura, Vegeta sits on the sidelines complaining how he can do better. Babidi takes the evil still within Vegeta and uses it to control him turning him into Majin Vegeta, an evil and powered up version of the real Vegeta. Babidi then sends Goku and Vegeta far away into a desert where their battle will help give more energy to Babidi's plan.
Majin Vegeta and Goku continue their battle until Goku feels that Majin Buu, the monster Babidi has been trying to release, has been summoned. Goku begs for Vegeta to stop and when he agrees to help Goku to fight Majin Buu, Goku lets his guard down. Goku reaches for a senzu bean as Vegeta surprises him and knocks him out, heading off to face Majin Buu alone.
Goku recovers and cannot sense Vegeta or his son Gohan anywhere on Earth leaving him to believe both have been killed by Majin Buu. Goku goes to Kami's Lookout where Dende can heal him and to hear the confirmation that Vegeta indeed died in battle. Goku doesn't have much time left on Earth and gets his friends to the lookout where he and Piccolo teach Trunks and Goten the fusion dance. The fusion dance is something Goku learned in the other world which allows to fighters to fuse into one much stronger being.
After teaching the dance Goku learns that Majin Buu is wrecking West City, and he must distract Buu in order for Trunks to get the dragon radar. Otherwise the dragonballs would be near impossible to find in the future. To distract Majin Buu, Goku goes into super saiyan 3, revealing this form for the first time. This form allows Goku to easily deal with Majin Buu landing blow after blow on the monster. However the energy used by the super saiyan 3 technique takes a lot of energy and doesn't seem to slow Buu down at all. Goku is forced to retreat and return to other world and once again say goodbye to his friends.
In other world Goku learns the truth about Gohan, who isn't dead. Instead Gohan was saved by Supreme Kai and is training Gohan and helping unlock more of Gohan's inner power. As Gohan trains, Goku watches the battle with Majin Buu below. Gotenks, Goten and Trunks fused, easily attains super saiyan 3 levels and begin to face off against Super Buu, a powerful form of Majin Buu. Gotenks and Super Buu's battle last a long time but Gotenks is winning until his power runs out and defuses. Its now up to Gohan to battle the beast.
Super Buu again seems outmatched but he manages to escape and absorb Piccolo and newly fused Gotenks creating an even more powerful Buu. Gohan can't handle Super Buu's new powers. Old Kai decides to give his life so Goku may have his life back and gives him a set of potara earrings, earrings that let to fighters fuse without doing the fusion dance. Goku heads to Earth planning to fuse with his son.
Goku tosses Gohan the earring only to have him miss. Goku turns super saiyan 3 and can easily handle Super Buu until Gohan himself is absorbed. Vegeta arrives just at this moment of despair and Goku is able to convince him to wear the earring with Goku, fusing the two rivals into Vegito. Vegito's powers are way too much for Super Buu until Vegito is also absorbed, but this time on purpose.
Defused inside Buu, Goku and Vegeta begin searching for their friends inside Buu. They free them all and even free Fat Buu, a Buu who resembles the original Majin Buu but who is less evil and more playful. Removing Fat Buu transforms Buu once again into Kid Buu.
Finally outside of Kid Buu just as Kid Buu decides to use his powers to destroy Earth completely. Goku, Vegeta, Dende, and Mr. Satan are all saved by Kibito Kai who teleports them all to the sacred world where all the Kais live and train. Kid Buu follows the Kai and the battle begins again with Goku taking point. Eventually going to super saiyan 3 Goku is able to dominate Kid Buu but having his body again drains a lot of his energy giving Vegeta the chance. Vegeta distracts Buu as Goku begins to gather a spirit bomb from every living creature across the universe, including a revived Earth thanks to the dragonballs.
Through King Kai, Vegeta speaks to everyone on Earth encouraging them to add their power to Goku's spirit bomb, same with those on new Namek, and the occupants of other world. Fat Buu, aka Majin Buu, can't hold Kid Buu off anymore and as Vegeta gives his last bit of energy fighting Mr. Satan tells everyone on Earth to give some more energy finally convincing them to give enough to Goku. Goku throws the spirit bomb but Kid Buu is able to stop the huge ball of energy and even begins pushing it back towards Goku.
Dende acts quickly and uses one more wish from the dragonballs to restore Goku's strength. This allows Goku to send he spirit bomb in and kill Kid Buu once and for all. As Buu is killed Goku makes a wish to himself, hoping that the good that was in Kid Buu could live on and be Goku's friend and partner in fighting.
Ten years pass and Goku has continued to train himself even though has remained at peace. He has now begun training his youngest son Goten and even enters him in the 28th Martial Arts Tournament. At the tournament Uub makes his first appearance, despite some apprehension. Uub is the birth of Kid Buu's good side born after King Yemma heard Goku's wish after Kid Buu's death. After the tournament Goku talks to Uub and promises to begin training him so there can be another protector of Earth, and to determine who is the true strongest in the universe. Their training is how Dragon Ball Z ends.
The series Dragon Ball GT picks up where Dragon Ball Z left off, with Goku and Uub training heavily in Kami's Lookout. As the two finish up Uub takes his leave and Goku hears something going and finds Emperor Pilaf trying to make a wish on the black star dragonballs, a set of dragonballs made before Kami and King Piccolo were split and are infused with a touch of evil. Pilaf has already summoned Shenron before spotting Goku and wishing under his breath that he wishes Goku was still a kid so Pilaf could easily handle him.
Shenron overhears his wish and makes it true and Goku is transformed back into a kid. Retaining his powers he scares off Pilaf and Goku must now go across the universe recovering the seven dragonballs to return to being an adult and to prevent the Earth from exploding. This dragonball set retains negative energy from wishes and one year after the initial wish Shenron returns and if no dragonballs are present he destroys the planet they were wished upon. So Goku, his granddaughter Pan, and Trunks all get aboard a spaceship and begin traveling around the galaxy.
Their trip is long and they must land on several different planets across the universe solving some native's problems and defeating foes to collect the black star dragonballs. Giru, a robot, helps them a long the way acting as both an ally and the dragon radar. Eventually they arrive on a planet with Dr. Myuu who has created several different types of robots that all attempt to stop Goku and his friends. Giru, temporarily turning traitor, saves Goku, Pan, and Trunks and shows them Myuu's secret, Baby. Baby is a parasite capable of enormous power but hasn't grown enough to pose any threat and the three heroes are able to disable his growth it seems.
Baby Saga:
Baby isn't defeated however and makes his way to Earth slowing taking over bodies of Earthlings until finding a saiyan in Goten. From Goten, Baby takes over Gohan, then Vegeta before planting his seed in every living person on Earth and beginning to enact his revenge. Baby is the last Tuffle, a race taken over and obliterated by saiyans, and is now trying to do the same back to the saiyans and establishing a new home for the Tuffle's rebirth.
After finding all seven dragonballs Goku, Pan, and Trunks get back to Earth and unknowingly give the balls to a Baby controlled Dende. The three return to their homes realizing something is amiss. Trunks had an egg from Baby already inside him and is soon taken over while Pan and Goku notice just in time. Baby, located in Vegeta's body, takes on Goku at his home and nearly kills him since Goku can't sustain super saiyan 3 very long. Goku lays nearly defeated as Baby fires an energy blast at him that nearly kills him. Luckily Kibito Kai is able to transport Goku to the Kai's home planet with Old Kai planning a way to defeat and kill Baby.
On the Kai planet Goku quickly begins new training focused on growing back his saiyan tail, this will unlock a resource of his power that will allow him to be stronger than Bay. After finally pulling on his tail so hard that is back to fully grown Goku returns to a new Tuffle planet wished for by Baby using the dragonballs Goku and Pan had just retrieved. Goku begins his battle again with Baby but nothing seems to have changed and Baby quickly overpowers him. Goku lays, defeated, staring back at Earth knowing he has failed his home. The Earth causes a transformation in Goku and he turns into a giant golden ape, similar to the ape he turned into as a child when he had his tail.
Golden Ape Goku loses control runs amok on the Tuffle city and Pan tries to stop him. Just as the ape is about to kill Pan he remembers who he is and transforms again, becoming a super saiyan 4. This new form and power is too much for Baby and Goku begins winning the battle once again. Baby, desperate to win, contacts Bulma, who is controlled by Baby, and demands for an answer to command the same power as Goku since Baby is inside Vegeta's body. Bulma quickly uses Blutz waves, an artificial moon light wave, on Baby which turns Vegeta's body into a golden ape himself. Able to control the golden ape Goku can't withstand the ape's pure power and gets beaten down.
In the meantime Old Kai sends Supreme Kai to Kami's Lookout to retrieve Sacred Water, a dirnk so powerful that it will cleanse anyone who touches it from anything, including Baby's control. Supreme Kai is able to travel to the Tuffle planet and free Gohan, Goten, and Trunks long enough to let them focus their power on Goku which gives him enough power to begin to beat Baby. With Vegeta's body defeated Baby runs away and attempts to escape using a nearby spacecraft. As Baby takes off Goku fires off one last kamehameha wave pushing Baby's craft into a nearby sun, killing him.
Super Android Saga:
With Baby gone the world is at peace again and another World Martial Arts Tournament is on the horizon. Goku, still stuck as a child, decides to enter but is told by Mr. Satan, the current reining champ, that there is a height requirement and Goku will be forced to enter the kid's tournament, hopefully protecting Mr. Satan's long standing championship. Goku does well in the tournament until Vegeta attempts a late entry which distracts Goku causing him to fall outside of the ring and losing. Still happy with his results Goku returns home and everyone is celebrating another day together when Trunks returns home, severely beaten.
Trunks claims it was Android 17 who attacked him without warning but let him live to tell Goku to travel to hell to confront him. Goku heads off and discovers Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu in hell, they distract Goku with old enemies in Frieza and Cell while they travel to Earth and seal a temporary opening between Earth and hell, trapping Goku in hell. Cell and Frieza attack but Goku is too powerful for either of them, unfortunately neither of them can actually be killed since they are already in hell and dead. As Goku continues to battle and beat his two former foes they show off their new technique, an energy shot from both of them that shoots Goku into other parts of hell.
In this new part of hell he is tortured and attacked but they have little effect on Goku since he is so powerful. Finally she shows him a freeze ray which encases Goku into a large block of ice. Cell and Frieza arrive gloating over Goku's vulnerable body, preparing to use one final move to finally kill him. However Goku's ice block begins to melt quickly, the ice was meant for a dead spirit but since Goku was alive his body was still warm and melting the ice. This allows Goku to break free and uses the torture freezing technique on both Cell and Frieza, trapping them.
Goku now focuses on a way out of hell but can't find a traditional way out since most people in hell are meant to stay there. Piccolo, who is in other world after sacrificing himself, begs to be let into hell and even resorts to pretending to be the evil Piccolo in order to convince King Yemma that he should be sent to hell. There Piccolo works with Dende to focus and coordinate their energy to open another portal between Earth and hell, allowing Goku back into Earth but trapping Piccolo in hell.
Goku arrives to find that Android 17 and a new hell version of Android 17 have fused together, forming Super Android 17. Goku does his best to try and beat the android but notices near the end of his battle that all his energy blasts are being absorbed by the Android making him stronger and stronger. Nearly defeated Android 18 shows up seeking to help Goku out in revenge of Krillin, whom Android 17 killed for no reason. 18 is able to distract Super 17 long enough for Goku to focus one last Super Dragon Fist at 17, which punches right through him. This destroys 17's ability to absorb any energy and one last kamehameha blast kills Super Android 17.
Black Star Dragon Saga:
The damage done by Super Android 17 is extensive and Goku and his friends collect the dragonballs and prepare to summon Shenron in hopes of reviving and reversing 17's actions. When Shenron is summoned nothing happens at first, and soon after black smoke beings to emanate from the balls forming a large black smoke dragon. This dragon then splits into seven different dragons, one for each dragonball and scatter across the Earth. Goku then sets out with Pan to, one by one, defeat these shadow dragons and retrieve the dragonballs inside them.
Goku and Pan learn that all their wishes from years after years of use has lead to the balls collecting negative energy within them. Each wish, even those made with the best of intentions, have indirectly created these shadow dragons. Luckily Goku is strong enough to destroy these dragons until only one remains, the strongest dragon. This dragon can't withstand Goku until is absorbs the other six dragonballs, forming an even more powerful dragon, Omega Shenron.
Even as a super saiyan 4 Goku cannot withstand the amazing power Omega Shenron wields. Luckily Vegeta soon arrives with a plan that also turns him into a super saiyan 4 and the two fuse together forming Gogeta. Gogeta powers up and easily handles Omega Shenron until the fusion quickly wears off. Now Omega Shenron is more powerful than any other being and focuses on killing Goku, blasting him right away.
Goku isn't dead though and begins building a spirit bomb. Goku raises up from the crater to a shocked Omega Shenron, collecting energy from every being on Earth. When the energy isn't enough, and withstanding energy attacks from Omega Shenron, Goku contacts King Kai who asks every being in the universe to give as much of their energy as they can spare to Goku. This universe powered spirit bomb is enough to finally use against Omega Shenron, and kills him once and for all.
The people of Earth celebrate their hero Goku as he and his friends summon Shenron one last time. Shenron, back to his normal self, explains that the dragonballs must leave Earth for a while so Earth can learn to solve problems without them. Goku asks for one more wish, wishing all those who died from the shadow dragons to be revived. After that final wish is granted Goku jumps onto Shenron's back and says his goodbyes, telling Vegeta he is Earth's new guardian.
Goku rides off with Shenron saying his goodbyes to a few friends along the way before falling asleep on Shenron's back. As Goku sleeps the dragonballs slowly absorb into his body before he and Shenon fly off to places unknown.
The series picks up just about 100 years later as another World Martial Arts Tournament is under way with Pan looking onward as her own grandson, Goku Jr., takes on Vegeta's own decedent, Vegeta Jr. As the two young super saiyans battle Pan think she spots Goku in the crowd but soon loses him. Goku is shown walking out of the stadium remembering all the times he helped save the Earth and all his former friends before jumping on his flying nimbus and flying off.
The first movie made from any Dragon Ball property, Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies, takes place during the original anime. The story generally follows the original story told in the Dragon Ball anime with some characters changed but mostly is the same. We see Goku first meet Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong, and a few other Dragon Ball main characters and he joins Bulma on a quest to collect all seven mystic dragonballs.
The major change is with Emperor Pilaf, who no longer exists and is taken place by King Gurumes. Gurumes has been tainted by blood rubies which make him hunger for food and for more power, including that of the power from the dragonballs. The film resolves just like the anime with Goku and his new friends confronting the evil king with the evil rubies wished away and Goku and his friends victorious in the end.
Similar to the first film the second Dragon Ball film, Dragon Ball: The Sleeping Pricess in the Devil's Castle, goes through story already covered in the anime but changing certain aspects so the story line is refreshed. Goku has traveled to Master Roshi's island to ask Roshi to train him, unfortunately Krillin has also traveled to Roshi to ask for the same and Roshi claims he can only accept one student. To decide who will become his student Roshi sends the two on a training mission to a castle where a princess is sleeping, the first one to return with the princess will win.
Bulma, Yamcha, and Oolong also follow Goku and Krillin hoping to help out while Launch, a woman with a split personality, is in the castle to steal the princess, which turns out to be a large jewel. Everyone is captured inside the castle and during the night Goku notices the full moon, which transforms him from into a large ape and begins running amok. Yamcha is able to cut off Goku's tail and gives everyone a chance to escape. Goku and Krillin return to Roshi with Launch, whom Roshi thinks is the princess, and he accepts both of them as his students.
The third in the Dragon Ball films, Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure, which picks up not long after the previous movie and borrows from the anime's story line. Goku and Krillin are under Master Roshi's training focusing heavily on the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament. Meanwhile we are introduced to Tien and Chiaotzu who are enemies at first and focuses on the story of how the two slowly become friends. Goku eventually helps collect all the dragonballs with his usual friends to wish back someone killed in the aftermath of Tien and Chiatozu's falling out.
The fourth and final Dragon Ball film, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power, which was made much later, for the Dragon Ball tenth anniversary, after the original three and well after many Dragon Ball Z films had been made. It retells the beginning of the Dragon Ball story including Goku meeting Bulma for the first time, heading off to collect all seven dragonballs with her, and meeting Yamcha, Oolong, and Master Roshi.
The team must face off against the Red Ribbon Army including their dangerous generals and Android 8, a powerful and deadly android. Overall the story matches the anime as Goku takes on the Red Ribbon Army, a constant antagonist through the anime series, and collects the dragonballs with Bulma.
The first movie based off the Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, anime which actually takes place before the majority of the events in the anime. The evil Garlic Jr. kidnapped Gohan, Goku's son, due to Gohan's possession of the four star dragonball which was a present from his father. With Garlic wishing to gather all seven dragonballs to wish for eternal life, Goku, Piccolo, Krillin, and Kami all break into Garlic's fortress. With Garlic and his goons eventually defeated , even after Garlic transforms into a hideous form of himself, the heroes are about to leave after rescuing Gohan.
As Goku and Piccolo decide to settle their fight, started towards the end of the Dragon Ball anime, Garlic Jr. uses his powers to open a rift. This rift leads to the Dead Zone and begins pulling everyone and everything into it. As all the heroes are about to sucked into the portal and possibly killed Gohan gets very angry seeing his dad about to be pulled in. This anger erupts power deep inside Gohan and, without him knowing his own actions, attacks and forces Garlic Jr. into the Dead Zone which seals the portal and saves the day.
The World's Strongest is the second Dragon Ball Z movie based on the anime. We pick up not to far into the series as a Dr. Wheelo has kidnapped Master Roshi and Bulma assuming that Roshi is the strongest warrior in the world and thus would be a perfect candidate for a body transfer. As Roshi is put through some battles and tests by Wheelo, Bulma blurts out that Roshi isn't the strongest but Goku is. It just so happens that Goku is approaching Wheelo's hideout to save his friends. Inside Goku fights off Wheelo's minions and then faces Piccolo, who has been brainwashed and controlled into his former evil self.
As the two fight Gohan gets upset to see his trainer and dad go at it which breaks Piccolo's mind control. With no more minions Wheelo reveals he is only a brain inside a robot and attacks. Despite their combined efforts and attacks Wheelo isn't defeated but is forced to flee Earth. As he is escaping he decides to destroy the Earth before finally leaving. As Piccolo and Gohan distract Wheelo long enough, Goku charges up a spirit bomb and launches it at Wheelo, killing him.
The third Dragon Ball Z film, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, takes places right before the Frieza saga begins in the anime. The Z fighters are enjoying a well earned peace by camping out in the woods when a forest fire threatens their good time. Krillin and Gohan help rescue animals in danger and learn the fire was started by a crash made by something from space. That object was a probe that preceded a small group led by a saiyan who land on Earth and begin growing a the tree of might, a tree that will take all of the life on planet Earth and absorb it.
Goku and his friends are told to go and try to destroy the tree by King Kai but can't make a dent in it. While trying to destroy the tree the mysterious saiyan's minions attack the group leaving only Goku strong enough to stand up to their attacks. With Goku distracted the saiyan, named Turles, goes after Gohan and attempts to turn him into an ally. When Gohan refuses Turles notices Gohan's tail and makes an artificial moon using energy. This new moon transforms Gohan into a Great Ape and he begins to attack Goku.
This plan back fires when Turles attacks one of the forest animals Gohan had rescued earlier. With Gohan turned against him Goku gets through the henchmen and turns his focus to Turles. The two begin the fight and Goku is handily winning until Turles eats some of the fruit the tree of might bears, which powers him up. While the Z fighters do their best to distract Turles, Goku is able to create a spirit bomb and launch it at Turles, killing both Turles and the tree of might in one shot.
The fourth of the Dragon Ball Z films, Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, and takes place toward the middle of the Frieza saga in the anime. An asteroid is approaching Earth and Goku and Krillin head out to destroy the asteroid. Their efforts move the asteroids path and it nearly misses the planet but contained a spaceship which blasts off from the asteroid and lands on Earth. Inside a large group of fighters emerge ready to attack all at the command of Lord Slug. Slug's plan is to change the atmosphere of Earth enough to make it easier for his soldiers and so it kills the native inhabitants.
After discovering Earth's dragonballs he collects all seven and wishes his youth and power back to him. Goku and his friends attack and dispatch his minions before taking on Slug himself. Goku and Slug are almost evenly matched but Slug overpowers Goku and begins to taunt him. These taunts push Goku over the edge and he nearly turns super saiyan and cuts off one of Slug's arms. Slug is unfazed since he is Namekian and his arm easily grows back and powers up, turning into a bigger form. As Slug transforms King Kai informs Goku that Slug is a super Namek, banished from Namek for abusing his powers.
Goku and Slug begins fighting again but Piccolo interrupts. Piccolo is no match for Slug but tells Goku to whistle at a high pitch, the noise is so high pitched that it hurts Namekian sensitive ears. Piccolo gives Goku the power he has left which powers Goku up enough to punch a hole in Slug stalling Slug long enough for Goku to power up a spirit bomb. The spirit bomb destroys both Slug and his atmosphere transforming machine.
Taking place right after Goku had killed Frieza and returned to Earth we are introduced to Cooler, Frieza's brother. Cooler receives word about his brother's death at the hand of a saiyan and takes offense that a simple saiyan could kill a member of his family. Cooler decides to come to Earth with his Armored Squad, similar to Frieza's Ginyu force, seeking out the saiyan who killed Frieza in hopes of restoring his family's honor. Their assault surprises a vacationing Goku and his friends leaving Goku injured but strong enough to withstand their attacks.
Cooler senses Goku's strength and surmises that his power must be a super saiyan which would explain how a simple saiyan could kill his brother. Goku hides in a cave while Cooler and his men continue to search and Gohan rushes to get a sensu bean that will heal Goku. Gohan eventually returns and Goku is able to take on Cooler who turns into another form making him even stronger. Goku turns into a super saiyan and over powers Cooler's energy attack with a kamehameha into the sun.
In a follow up to the previous Dragon Ball Z movie the Z fighters sense danger on New Namek, the planet the Namekians retreated to when their original planet was destroyed by Frieza. When they arrive they find Cooler ressurected and rebuilt using robots to take over New Namek. Goku and Vegeta both turn super saiyan and attack Cooler but their power isn't enough to take on Cooler's new form and they are captured. Cooler plans to absorb their energy into the Big Gete Star, the same machine that helped rebuild his body in hopes of powering himself and his robots up.
Goku and Vegeta power up while their energy is being stolen, overpowering the machine and the Big Gete Star destroying both. Cooler is now returned to his former self, only remains, and Goku and Vegeta blast what is left killing Cooler.
The seventh Dragon Ball Z film, Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, takes place during the android saga within the anime. After Dr. Gero is killed by his creations Android 17 and 18 his brain is still up and running below ground inside of a computer. That computer was still engineering more androids with the intent of killing Goku. Android 14 and 15 both are sent out after Goku who is in the city shopping with Chi-Chi. Goku, along with future Trunks, leads the two machines out of the city so their fight won't hurt anyone else.
The fight is pretty even until the 'ultimate' android arrives, Android 13. Vegeta and Piccolo soon join the fight as well and one by one the androids fall, with 14 and 15 being killed. Android 13 seems to be next but soon shows off his next form by taking in the parts of his fallen android brethren and becoming Super Android 13. None of the fighters are strong enough to overcome the android's new powers. Goku forms a spirit bomb and absorbs the power into himself as well as turning super saiyan which gives him what he needs to overpower and kill Android 13.
The next Dragon Ball Z film, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, released in 1993 in Japan and 2003 in the US. Goku's life is interrupted when King Kai contacts him warning him about a new type of saiyan, a legendary super saiyan. Goku begins searching around the universe, traveling from planet to planet, looking for the energy of the new legendary super saiyan. He eventually arrives on the new planet Vegeta, modeled and named off of the Saiyan planet destroyed by Frieza. There he meets Vegeta who had been brought there by a saiyan Paragus who wants Vegeta to take over and rule.
Soon though they discover that Paragus' son is the legendary super saiyan Goku was warned about. Broly, Paragus' son, had been safely placed under Paragus' control but soon breaks free. As the fight begins Paragus reveals that an asteroid is coming to destroy new Vegeta and was a part of Paragus' plan to kill Vegeta to get revenge against his father. Broly easily beats Goku and his friends but they all give up their energy to Goku making him more powerful and able to defeat Broly. Goku transmits his friends away from new Vegeta just as the asteroid hit and destroys the planet.
Ninth Dragon Ball Z film, Bojack Unbound, takes place shortly after the Cell saga in the anime ends with Goku dead in other world. We find most of his friends battling it out in a friendly matches in another World Martial Arts Tournament. Bojack however has other plans with the tournament. Having been freed during the Cell saga, thanks to Goku's sacrifice when he transported an exploding Cell to King Kai's planet, and infiltrates the tournament setting up some of his minions to fight the Z fighters. The fighters seem unable to beat the enemies especially Bojack who fights and begins to crush Gohan.
Goku instantly transports himself down to Earth punching Bojack away and telling Gohan that he must let everything go and attack Bojack to protect the Earth. As Goku returns to other world Gohan doesn't have much time to wonder what he just saw before fighting Bojack again. This time Gohan is able to let loose his power like his father suggested and attack and defeat Bojack and his minions.
Generally happy, cheerful, and upbeat Goku is one of the most positive characters in all of the Dragon Ball series. Goku seems to almost always have a smile on his face and will even let evil villains live after a fight almost so to a fault. He is extremely loyal to his friends and has an iron will morality. During a fight though Goku can become relentless and fierce not giving up against evil and seemingly always having a plan in the back of his mind.
Goku also has the tendency to have a huge appetite, almost to a fault. After an intense training session or extra fierce fight, or on any given day, Goku will run out of energy and become desperately hungry. Once he finds his food Goku can eat food enough for a small army all by himself and in a relatively short time.
