A modern day Robin Hood, he is a superhero who is a master marksman with a bow and incidentally a long-time member of the Justice League.
A DC Comics superhero who first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941), he was created by writer Mort Weisenger and artist George Papp. Aside from the obvious Robin Hood inspiration, Weisenger also drew inspiration from the "The Green Archer" 1940 serial.
Green Arrow is actually a billionaire playboy and businessman, Oliver Queen who ran Queen Industries in Star City. As Green Arrow, he dressed up as a Robin Hood-themed costume and used various 'trick arrows' which were customized to included smoke, explosive, nets, boomerang, and boxing glove arrowheads.
He was considered simply an 'archery themed' version of the earlier and more popular DC superhero Batman; a similarity that was enhanced by the presence of a boy sidekick and he operated out of "The Arrow Cave" and used a specially built "Arrow Car" and "Arrow Plane". Unlike the vast majority of superheroes who simply vanished at the end of the Golden Age of Comics, Green Arrow is one of the few who escaped being shuffled off into limbo and was kept in publication in back up features.
He still remained a relatively minor character for the most part until he underwent a major reboot at the hands of artist Neal Adams who updated his outfit as well as giving him his now iconic goatee while writer Denny O'Neil wrote him as an outspoken left wing liberal and political activist after he lost his entire fortune and company in the late 1960s and developing a long-term romantic relationship with Black Canary as well as becoming close friends with fellow Justice League member Green Lantern.
Ultimately in the 1990s, flagging sales saw DC Comics kill Oliver Queen off to replace him with Connor Hawke, Oliver's illegitimate son who took up his mantle to honor his father. Ultimately, the character proved less than popular and DC resurrected Oliver Queen as Green Arrow where he remains as one of their lesser characters although he has grown in popularity and recognition as he has made more appearances in animated cartoons and the recent live action series such as Smallville and Arrow.
A 12-minute animated feature accompanying the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse DVD, Green Arrow is in his civilian guise at the airport to pick up Black Canary and propose to her when he gets in the middle of an assassination attempt by Merlyn on Princess Perdita of Vlatava, who is the niece of Count Vertigo and the next in line for the throne. Green Arrow outshoots Merlyn but is about to be defeated by Vertigo when he is rescued by Black Canary and proceeds to get down on his knee to propose to her.
A former associate of the Batman and Superman, an aged Green Arrow apparently lost one of his arms thanks to Superman. He was later captured and imprisoned by the United States Government but subsequently escaped. Due to increasing publicity and media attention of Batman's reemergence, Oliver visits Wayne Manor where he requests to participate in whatever it is that Wayne has planned for his final confrontation with Superman, indicating that he still maintains a grudge against Superman for costing him, his arm.
Wayne acquiesces and Oliver is present at Crime Alley, saving Batman from a sniper and then subsequently shoots a kryptonite arrow at Superman, disabling him long enough for Batman to defeat him. Oliver escapes with Carrie Kelly and is later seen, helping the former Mutant Gang set up their new underground headquarters after Bruce Wayne's "funeral".
Following the Thanagarian Invasion, the Justice League is rapidly expanding their membership ranks and among their newest recruits is Green Arrow. At first reluctant to serve in the League because they "focuses on big threats leaves them too busy to help the little guy", Green Arrow ultimately decides to stick around and help out.
Green Arrow was a regular guest star on Justice League Unlimited, appearing in twelve episodes with speaking parts in nine of them. In all of his appearances he was voiced by Kin Shriner.
First appearing in the sixth season episode, "Sneeze", Green Arrow was an anti-hero who was fiercely opposed to Lex Luthor and came into conflict with Clark Kent. Despite a rocky start, the pair ultimately became allies and friends.
His association with Clark led Oliver to consider teaming up with others to enhance their effectiveness and he locates and recruits Victor Stone, Arthur Curry, and Bart Allen to create a proto-Justice League.
He later marries Chloe Sullivan who bears him a son.
