Mexican writer and director, known for the unique visual design in his movies. He became notable after directing creature features like Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy series. His films usually range from campy and fun to scary and brutal.
Del Toro was born October 9, 1964 in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, raised by his Catholic grandmother. When growing up Del Toro wa sfascinated by the horror stories his nanny told, later on in life he developed an interest in filmmaking in his early teens. Later, he learned about makeup and effects from Dick Smith (Famous for "The Exorcist" 1973) and worked on making his own short films. At the age of 21, del Toro executive produced his first feature, Dona Herlinda and Her Son in 1986. Del Toro spent almost 10 years as a makeup supervisor, and formed his own company, Necropia in the early 1980s. He also produced and directed Mexican television programs at this time, and taught film.
His first big break when Cronos in 1993 won nine academy awards in Mexico, then went on to win the International Critics Week prize at Cannes. D el Toro made his first Hollywood film, Mimic, in 1997. He has cited making Mimic as one of the worst experiences of his life, saying it is the worst of his films and has disowned it, blaming constant interference from the producers as the reason for the poor result.
After Mimic he returned to Mexico and created the fantastically named production company "The Tequila gang". His next film was The Devil's backbone in 2001. The film was raved about by critics and audiences alike, and del Toro gave Hollywood a second shot. In 2002, he directed Blade II. He then followed this with another successful comic-book inspired film, Hellboy, in 2004. Citing Ron Perlman as one of his favourite actors, he was thrilled to get him for Hellboy.
