Dig Deeper into Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

One of the most heavily hyped movies of all time, the first episode in the popular Star Wars saga follows two Jedi Knights as they try to protect the peaceful planet of Naboo from an invasion from the greedy Trade Federation.

@TepidShark

By the way my ranking of the Star Wars films starting from best and going to worst (by Episode) is: 4, 5, 3, 6, 1, 2.

Why 3 above 6? Just curious.

I've actually come full circle on Phantom Menace. I loved it, than hated it - like everybody else. But now I sort of like it and respect the hell out of it, as weird as it sounds. The rest of the prequel trilogy just feels too reactionary to me; I mean, there's less imagination so much as there is "What is the halfway point between Phantom Menace visual style and tech and A New Hope?". A ton of which just bugs me, like the sudden, complete abandonment of the sleek, curvy, regal vehicular design for those ugly boxy Jedi Starfighters. Or the fact that Anakin ages so rapidly, yet Padme does not. Continuity is not Lucas' strong suit; and changing so much of what was established to "catch up" to Episode IV doesn't help him.

Is it a great movie? Fuck no. Do the performances still sting? Yes. Is Jar-Jar annoying; sure...although not NEARLY as much as the internet has made it out to be if we're being honest. But there's a whole lot here that's cool - Darth Maul, the pod race, etc. - and it's real nice to see some genuinely unexpected sights and great sci-fi fantasy. Chunks of this movie look like Dinotopia. It's the only prequel trilogy to really establish it's own identity and it's different; it's also pretty great. We all wanted to see more "Original Trilogy" stuff at the time, but c'mon - that stuff exists all right on it's own. Now, I appreciate the new and the different, and I dig Episode I for accomplishing that mission.

I'm happy to see Screened do this vid then ;)

Return of the Jedi is mostly pretty boring. Revenge of the Sith has really good action bits & even if the acting/dialogue is pretty bad, I like the story of the film.

I remember being like 8 when phantom menace came out and really liking Jar Jar actually, so I guess Lucas hit his target audience with that?

spellenbergon Oct. 7, 2011 at 1:03 a.m.

i don't hate this one. Jar jar is not for me, but when i took my brother who was ten at the time to se the film, he loved it. And out of the prequels it is the one that makes the most sence storywise. Granted that isn't saying much but still. In any case the lightsaber duel at the end is aways enjoyable to watch.

Eyzon Oct. 7, 2011 at 2:11 a.m.

For some reason, Jar Jar or no Jar Jar, I've always had more problem with Episode 2. Where almost nothing happens beside 2-3 long running action scenes and much talking nonsense..and the CGi-fest always bore me..

"Half Good: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace"

No. It isn't.

Xcessiveon Oct. 7, 2011 at 2:51 a.m.

I loved this when I was younger. However looking back, Jar Jar most defiantly needs to die a miserable death.

I wish to urinate on his corpse at this point.

A half good that doesn't mention John Williams's score? For my money he's the most consistently awesome part of Star Wars over all 6 movies.
zFUBARzon Oct. 7, 2011 at 4:47 a.m.

lol by far the best half good title-card sequence yet.

Slaker117on Oct. 7, 2011 at 4:57 a.m.

I'll admit that Episode 1 isn't as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, and some parts of it are legitimately well done, but it's still the only Star Wars movie that I actively don't want to watch ever again.

sickVisionzon Oct. 7, 2011 at 5:05 a.m.

Half-good is giving this film way too much credit. Unlike many who post on the web, PM was the first SW movie I ever saw. I'd never been interested in the series before but I decided to check this one out with some friends. I remember walking out of the theater and telling them, "This is the crap you guys are always ranting and raving about?" Phantom Menace is god awful outside of the Darth Maul fight. It completely turned me off from ever watching the series. Luckily I played a demo for Jedi Knight at a store a few years later and enjoyed that enough to give the franchise another shot.

Dizzyhipposon Oct. 7, 2011 at 6:01 a.m.

Honestly I couldn't care less about what George Lucas does to star wars as far as new movies go. What I mind is him going back and editing that shit into the originals

skiddon Oct. 7, 2011 at 6:08 a.m.

I remember loving the audiobook version of Terry Brooks' book adaptation, but being thoroughly underwhelmed by the time I saw the film. Maybe there was a decent story in there somewhere, but the movie was just too hampered by the various weaknesses...or maybe I just had lower standards when I was a kid.

MikkaQon Oct. 7, 2011 at 7:39 a.m.

I think this one is the better of the three, those last two were unbearable. I'd rather watch Jake Lloyd than Hayden Christensen.
