Do you know anything about a guy going around playing the harmonica? He's someone you'd remember. Instead of talking, he plays. And when he better play, he talks. - Chayenne

Keep your lovin' brother happy
Harmonica is on a quest for revenge and looking for a man called Frank. Through several flashbacks (the last one just before the climatic end) it's discovered that Frank killed his brother i a very cruel way. A teenage boy at the time young Harmonica is seen carrying his older brother's weight on his shoulders, with the brother having a snare around his neck. Frank puts a harmonica in the young boys mouth an tell him to "keep your lovin' brother happy". Frank then steps away and he and his gang watches joyfully as the young boy succumbs to his brothers weight.

Frank and Harmonica runs in to each other several times trough the film (with every encounter setting of a flashback) but Harmonica waits patiently for the right time, even saving Frank from being shot at one time. During the course of the film we also see Harmonica teaming up with outlaw Cheyenne to help the widow Jill McBain save the Sweetwater estate and thereby thwarting the plans of Frank's employer Mr. Morton.

The final confrontation occurs outside of Sweetwater with Harmonica waiting outside. Frank rides up to him asking what his after with Harmonica replying the famous line "Only at the point of dyin'." The two men move to the back of the building and after showing the last flashback Harmonica shoots Frank. He then approaches the mortally wounded man and returns the favor of the past.

With his task being completed Harmonica leaves Sweetwater and can be seen riding away during the end credits.

The casting

Charles Bronson was not the first choice of Sergio Leone. The director wanted both Clint Eastwood (whom he had worked with three times before) and James Coburn (they instead teamed up for Leone's next film A Fistful of Dynamite) for the role but when both turned it down it went to Bronson.
