Welcome to Pott-a-thon. These reviews will be a little bit different
than my regular stuff, since I will be listing my favorite moments of
each Harry Potter film, as well as linking to a list where I rank the
Potter films from best to worst. I have seen every Harry Potter film,
but I've decided to see all of them again as Deathly Hallows: Part II is
coming to theaters later this week. As a side note, I do consider myself as a fan of the Harry Potter universe, although I have only read the two final books.
I must admit, I absolutely loved
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It is by far the best film of the series so far, because it is one that focuses much more on the characters than the magic that they master and perform. It's a movie that is completely enchanting - there's absolutely gorgeous art direction to be found here, and
Hogwarts castle looks as spooky and dark and beautiful as never before, when viewed through the eyes of
Bruno Delbonnel, who has to be one of the best cinematographers in the business, and
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a brilliantly shot film. This
Harry Potter installment was the first one where I really enjoyed watching one of the lead performances -
Rupert Grint was very good in this one as
Ron Weasley, just one of the characters that made this movie so, so enjoyable and very, very funny. There's also
Jim Broadbent who joins
Alan Rickman and
Imelda Staunton to make the ultimate trio of my favorite
Harry Potter characters in film - he's great as the genuinely weird professor
Slughorn.
David Yate's direction has also significantly improved, as he manages to make the perfect balance between humor, teen romance, darkness and tragedy. It is the least action packed
Harry Potter film, but somehow it feels like it's the most magical thus far.
Favorite moment: Harry, Dumbledore and Snape at the Astronomy Tower.
