Finally saw Heat, WHY WASN'T THIS MOVIE NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE!?

Well judging by the nominees, it looked like there were too man oscar voter friendly films (babe, sense and sensibility) . Heat was probably too outrageous and different to be nominated.

Has Michael Mann ever won an Oscar for best director? His new stuff has been awful but the guy has delivered many a masterpiece.

It was too hot to handle.

It was marketed as an action flick, at a time when the award group was extra snotty about who thy gave nods to. Also, the director and a few others working on the film are not in the pockets of the committee. I'd rather it be more unrecognized, so people don't look back at it an complain, "Heat didn't deserve an Oscar."

Action-heavy movies never got any nods at the Oscars in the 90's, so it doesn't surprise me. And Best Picture rarely goes to the actual best movie of the year. If you ever see a list of movies that came out the same year as the best picture, you've most likely never heard of the winner and several classic films appear on the losing side, its a real shame. But there's a reason George C. Scott didn't accept his award at the Oscars...
