Heaven's Gate (1980)

Edit this Page
Michael Cimino Director previously directed The Deer Hunter

Based on the Johnson County War in the 1890s, Heaven's Gate is known less for the movie itself and more for being a colossal box office bomb. It also caused movie studios to move away from direct-driven film production and more towards studio-driven production.

Trivia:

This movie helped popularize the director's cut format: When studio heads first saw the massive run time they panicked and hastidly put together a recut shortened version which was released to theaters in lieu of the original. It was only some time later when a local movie channel actually broadcast the movie in it's original form. Today the director's cut is the only version the you can buy.
