Heist film

Heist films are movies where the central plot element is the theft of something, often with complicated twists and turns

Often considered synonymous with a caper film, heist films involve the theft of an item--money or other monetarily/sentimentally valuable object--from a heavily fortified or otherwise extraordinarily secured location. The plot often also includes an individual villain or villainous organization who oppose the protagonists.

The first heist films appeared as far back as the silent era with 1915's MGM feature Alias Jimmy Valentine and rose sharply in popularity in the 1940s. The popularity of this concept tapered off a bit in the following decades, but its fortunes rose once again with the cult success of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs in 1992, which also turned out to be one of the most bloody examples. Financially, the modern remake of Ocean's 11 has emerged as the most lucrative caper film of all time.

The archetypical heist film plot occurs in three acts: preparation, including gathering allies, collecting tools and casing locations; the heist itself; and finally the reveal on how the heist actually occurred. Whether the perpetrators of the heist actually stay together and remain allies in the aftermath--or even stay alive--is handled different in every case.
