Hercules is the Greek mythological character whose supreme strength enabled him to perform the "12 Labors", tasks set before him by the gods of Olympus. Hercules has appeared in one form or another in several movies and T.V. shows, often times in a manner far from his mythological roots.
Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek hero Heracles, who was the son of Zeus (whose Roman equivalent is Jupiter) and the mortal woman Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is famous for his vast super-human strength and for his numerous far-ranging adventures.
The Romans adapted the Greek hero's iconography and myths for their literature and art under the name Hercules. In later Western art and literature and in popular culture, Hercules is far more commonly used than Heracles, a name that has practically been forgotten, as the name of the hero. In myth, Hercules was a multifaceted figure with several contradictory characteristics. It is these contradictions which enable later artists and writers to pick and choose how to represent him.
Originating in ancient Greece, the legend of Hercules extends back over 3,500 years into the past. Born the demigod son of Zeus, ruler of the Olympian Gods, Hercules was blessed with supreme super-human strength. His heroics began while he was still in the cradle when he killed two serpents sent to slay him and extended well past his famous Twelve Labors. Many are the stories of Hercules and his deeds in ancient myth, including his founding of the Olympic Games, defeating Death in a wrestling match, holding the weight of the world on his shoulders, becoming an actual god, and many, many more. The Legend of Hercules, and his enormous strength has interested and entertained people for thousands of years. It's this fascination with Hercules that has made him a perfect subject/character for countless forms of media including movies and television shows.
Hercules has been portrayed by many actors including; bodybuilding legends Steve Reeves, Reg Park, Mickey Hargitay, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. Actors Kevin Sorbo, Brian Thompson and former model Paul Telfer have also played the role Hercules.
