Harry and Ron first meet Hermione on the Hogwarts Express on their way to their first year at Hogwarts. They are initially put off by her arrogant, smarty-pants attitude. They tried their best to avoid Hermione while at school, but that changed on Halloween night when a troll got loose in the castle. Harry and Ron find Hermione cornered by the troll in the bathroom. They jump in to save her and take down the troll. When they are confronted by professors about the incident, Hermione covers for the boys by telling them that she had tried to fight the troll and that they saved her. From that day on, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were the best of friends.

Hermione was instrumental in finding the Philosopher's Stone. She was the one who discovered the history of Nicholas Flamel and the Stone. While passing through the trials leading up to the Stone, she defeated the Devil's Snare by using a fire spell.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Hermione is first called a "Mudblood" by Draco Malfoy in her second year at Hogwarts. Mudblood is a derogatory term in the wizarding world that refers to someone born to Muggle parents. When Harry needed to gather information from Draco on who the Heir of Slytherin was, Hermione put together polyjuice potions to turn themselves into Slytherin students. While gathering hair for the potion, Hermione accidentally picked up cat hair and turned herself into a part human/ part cat hybrid. The effects of this took weeks to finally wear off. After successfully identifying the creature that was petrifying students as the basilisk, she is petrified herself. She is revived after Harry kills the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets.

When Professor Snape was filling in for an absent Professor Lupin, he teaches the students about werewolves. Using the information learned in this class, Hermione is able to discover Lupin's secret; he is a werewolf. At the end of the movie, it is revealed that she has a Time-Turner, a device that she has been using to manipulate time to attend all of her classes. Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to go back in time to rescue Buckbeak the hippogriff from being executed and Sirius Black from the Dementor's kiss.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Hermione spent most of her summer before her 4th year at Hogwarts with the Weasleys at their house, the Burrow. She attends the Quidditch World Cup with Harry and the Weasleys before heading back to school. After Harry is chosen by the Goblet of Fire to take part in the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Hermione is the only person who believed Harry when he said he didn't put his name in the Goblet. Hermione attends the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum, much to Ron's chagrin. This situation marks the first time it is hinted at that there might be a relationship brewing between Ron and Hermione.

This movie also explores in depth the relationship between Hermione and Ron. Ron declines an invitation to Professor Slughorn's Christmas party and instead starts to date Lavender Brown. Later, Ron drinks some poisoned mead and is taken to the infirmary. While in a delirium, he calls out for Hermione, which causes Lavender to leave and break off her relationship with Ron . Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

In order to help Harry with his mission to destroy the horcruxes, Hermione wiped her parent's memory of her so that they wouldn't be dragged into the battle with Voldemort. Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour stops by the Weasley house to give Harry, Ron, and Hermione their inheritance from Dumbledore's will. Hermione is given a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a book of wizard children stories. She has no idea why Dumbledore gave this to her, but she held on to it thinking it would somehow help them in their journey to destroy the horcruxes. While on this journey, Ron becomes jealous because Harry and Hermione are not including him in their planning and he suspects there might be something going on between them. Ron eventually walks out on them and Harry and Hermione continue the search for the horcruxes. Ron eventually comes back, but Hermione is reluctant to trust him right away. After finding a mysterious symbol in the book Dumbledore gave Hermione, they decide to talk to Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna's father. At his house, he reveals that the symbol refers to the Deathly Hallows, which are mentioned in a story in The Tales of Beedle the Bard. He then tries to turn them in to the Death Eaters in exchange for the release of his daughter, but they escape. They are eventually caught and taken to Malfoy Manor and Hermione is tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange, who carves the word "Mudblood" into her arm. They escape the manor along with Luna and Griphook the Goblin with the help of Dobby. Dobby dies during the escape and the trio give him a proper funeral.
