A Heroic Sacrifice is when a character makes a sacrifice for the benefit and well-being of others. This is quite possibly the most prevalent cliche in cinema today.
The cliche is often tied with themes of redemption - often, the hero who sacrifices himself either has some past sins he has yet to attone for or serves as a rival or villain to the film's protagonist.
