This Will Mercifully Be The Last Season Of House M.D.

It looks like House M.D. might've diagnosed its last case of lupus, with FOX declining to pick the show up for a ninth season. There's been enough turmoil on the show over the past couple of seasons to make any network wary, with significant cast members being asked to take payroll cuts and one (the actress who plays Cuddy) refusing, opting to leave the show instead. When you get into the seventh or eighth season of a show, salaries become so high that you need to maintain awfully high ratings to continue to make a show a good financial bet, and House hit its peak in seasons three and four, having slid quite a bit in the ratings since then. Eventually there comes a point where syndication will make you more money than actually making new episodes of a series, especially with Hugh Laurie's contract up at the end of the season; he'd likely want a fair amount of cash to come back for another two or three years.

Deadline indicates that it's possible that Universal, which actually produces the show (they license it to FOX) may bring it back on another network, but it'd be a likewise expensive show for any other network to pick up. Regardless, the decision has apparently been made early enough for House to actually get a real finale, rather than simply ending on a cliffhanger. [Edit: According to an open letter from David Shore, producer Katie Jacobs, and Hugh Laurie, they are not going to attempt to move the show to another network, and this will definitely be its last.]

If you've been following House all these years, how do you think it has to end? Obviously House and Cuddy aren't going to get together (barring an amazingly gracious cameo on the part of Lisa Edelstein), so maybe he'll lose his leg? Or kill someone while high on vicodin and get sent back to jail for real, forever? It'll be curious to see how it all resolves, even if I'm not too likely to tune in until the last episode, this season being less than remarkable.

It was a good show for awhile. I couldn't handle the same formula every week and the eventual lack of interesting side characters a few seasons back and stopped watching.

The entire show actually takes place in a holodeck inside a snowglobe.

If this turned out to be true my mind would explode

The recent episode involving an accident with the Chase character was enjoyable and reminded me of what I like about the series. That said, I think it's about time the series ended. They have done more than enough with the premise they had which only left them with piling on inter-character drama and twists that can be hit and miss.

I don't know how the series should end, but Hugh Laurie said on a DVD extra that it should be ridiculous and outrageous. That is the right way for the character to go.

I think Monday's episode was one of the best episodes in years. That being said, I wouldn't mind if the show was ended after this season. I really hope House falls really far in the end, possibly dies.

i thought it was already official that this was the last season. even tho i still watch it, it hasnt been great (or even good for most part) in years, i guess thats normal for any show that hits its 8th season, but it just feels like they have nothing else to do with the show, no more stories to tell. im glad its over (soon)

@PatVB: Yep, and It's all Bob Newhart's dream.

I don't think they'll outright kill House but I think getting rid of his leg seems like a reasonable ending. Last week's episode was really good and reminded me why I still watch House because the darker episodes usually end up being some of the best ones.

I hope in the last episode that it's finally going to be lupus.

It was actually Lupus once in a season 4 episode http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Don't_Want_to_Know

I remember watching that episode and being shocked and a little depressed.

I haven't seriously watched this show for a few years, but I would like to see how bat shit crazy it has gotten in the past few seasons as that is the only way I could ever imagine it turning out. Anything else would be disappointing.

Off with his leg!

I am looking forward to the end. Hopefully it will be crazy and outrageous.

Glad this is coming to a close, and that it'll get a proper ending rather than the typical season-end cliffhanger, only to never return. House has been one of the only two shows I've continued to watch (Top Gear the other), and this season more than any has really started to feel like ER (that's not a good thing). Hopefully the ending ends up having a lot of psycho House, and not a neat, clean and happy tie up.

Edit: Just finished watching this week's episode, and it's crazy how much the style and seriousness of the show fluctuates between episodes. There was undeniably a return to the darker humour and revocation of high-school drama atmosphere in this episode. Promising for a great finale.

Good! Maybe Laurie could go back to comedy or something. House got stale a while ago.

this season being less than remarkable

Disagree with this enough to post. I have been watching from the beginning and found this season to be refreshing and quite remarkable. There have been many memorable episodes for me this season and it shows potential the series could get even better. Last Monday's episode was simply excellent.

I loved House... for the first few seasons, but it went on way too long. I'll tune in for the last episode.

Who wants to bet the last case involves lupus?
