House of Cards Forum

Now that House of Cards is finally available for all Netflix subscribers, I was wondering what people think about it.

I only watched the first episode due to the fact that I stayed up until midnight waiting for Netflix to release them and wanted to get a decent night's sleep, but I found it to be good. It does have some cliches that come with this type of thriller and Francis breaking the fourth wall to constantly voice his inner thoughts is getting a bit hammy. It's shot really well but it's David goddamn Fincher so it will look good anyway. I'm interested in seeing where they go for the rest of the season.

Ok I've watched ep 1-6 in one batch so far and it's pretty damn good. After Fincher stopped directing after 2 it loses that Finchery touch, but that is expected. Without Fincher things aren't as stylish but James Foley (eps 3-4) and Joel Schumacher (5-6) are competent enough.

It feels like an "evil" version of West Wing where instead of everyone being charming and dickish everyone is either a vampire or their food. That said the character of Frank Underwood kind of starts off as evil and juvinile in his want for vengance but now he is just having fun and it's fun seeing someone just be such an agent of change.

I'll prolly write somethign after I'm done.

THIS SHOW IS AS SUBTLE AS A BRICK, I said before there was a whole episode about a brick.

Everyone is so god damn evil in house of cards, Kevin spacey is satan incarnate, and everyone speaks in the least veiled threats imaginable IN CREEPY SHADOWS. It's real dumb. It's a very TV friendly and unrealistic style of evil politics, see The Wire for the other side of that coin.

But I'm still watching, because in the end that dumb stuff is it's charm, without it it would just be bland.
