In between the frankly bizarre talk about up-converting a sequel to a film that was roundly hated for its shitty up-conversion is that little Inception tidbit. As far as I know, no one has really said anything about a possible 3D conversion for Inception, and it seems mildly ridiculous that Warner Bros. would put in the kind of money a good conversion requires just to have a 3D Blu-Ray release. If they are converting it, I'd bet even money that a theatrical re-release would be on the docket, especially if Nolan is supervising the work.I did a bunch of test with different digital cameras…and the one thing that was very difficult for me was, I felt for a Greek epic I wanted to shoot on film to get that texture that I was looking for with that motion blur. The clincher for me was Warner Bros. showed me how far conversion had come. They showed me Chris Nolan Inception converting for the DVD, they showed me Harry Potter being converted. So now what we’re doing is, I wanna shoot film, we’re gonna have what are called stereographers on set who are guys who are sitting there advising you.
That's all just supposition at this point, though, and nothing will be official until Warner Bros. makes an announcement. But if Avatar can get a re-release less than a year after coming out, then it's a safe bet to say that Inception could probably also eke out another few million through a re-release. Here's hoping a 3D conversion doesn't wind up marring a movie that it's probably fair to call beloved by many film fans.
