It is diegetic. The characters actually comment on it, it isn't even supposed to be hidden :P

I just saw it again today in IMAX, just so I could have the soundtrack punching my face in. Awesome.
During the "kick" as the Ice Outpost is blowing up, as the heroes are waking you can hear the cue at different speeds. Very cool detail.
Now I cannot wait for blu-ray so I can nail the final pieces together in this movie, man it's got a lot to process.

Basically the ENTIRE score is variations on the song.  It's the same thing Michael Kamen did with Brazil.
