An army of alien spacecrafts appears over cities across the globe, attacking on July 2nd. David Levison, a computer genius who tried to warn the US government, and Steven Hiller, a military fighter pilot, lead the offensive against the hostile aliens.

Trivia:

The US Military, particularly the Air Force, originally was willing to provide production support to the film, until finding out that the plot featured Area 51. They then pulled their support after the writers refused to remove all references to the base.
