At least it is coming out on Independence Day weekend, so they got that right. But I'm already exhausted of the 3D re-releases of older movies. I'd go see ID4 on the big screen but the fact that it's in 3D makes me NOT want to see it. Hollywood is dead set on milking as much money as they can from their older movies by wasting time converting it into 3D until it crashes and burns. Hopefully by 2014, 3D will be walking the green mile by then.

A rerelease is something I could get behind for this movie. Even an upgrade to the film.

But a no thank you to the 3D.

I wouldn't mind seeing it in theaters again but not in 3D

I never liked this movie.  I remember being so psyched to see it as a kid and just being so let down.  It was one of the first films I hated as a kid.  My taste in movies was pretty shitty at that age. I thought movies like Super Mario Brothers, Garbage Pail Kids, Howard the Duck, and Double Dragon were fun.   I remember liking the explosions and thought the aliens looked neat but there were all these little scenes like the dog making it out of the way of the alien blast at the last second or Jeff Goldblum's scientific process of saying aloud seemingly random nonsense until he puts it all together.   The movie is chock full of these dumb little scenes to the point that it ruined my enjoyment of seeing aliens wreck shit.

So what I guess I am saying is Mars Attack is the better film and deserves the 3D re-release.

You know what I think they should re-released with a modern 3D upgrade? Some of those old 1950's 3D movies that used the red and blue tint process. Creature From the Black Lagoon, House of Wax, Kiss Me Kate, and Dial M for Murder. Not everything from that era of 3D was Robot Monster.

I don't care to see ID4 again and I wonder if re-releasing this movie isn't just to test audience interest in a sequel. I heard they were working on some scripts last year for ID4 2 but I don't know if any studio has greenlit filming yet.

@PenguinDust: good point that it could be a way of testing interest in a sequel.

I like 3D rereleases, but the thing that concerns me is that no where in the announcement was there any mention that Roland Emmerich was involved in the conversion. In fact, it doesn't appear they even got his permission. That seems unethical to me.

@VioletEyedDragon: But you seemingly punish yourself by seeing every movie in 3D and then write report cards on. If you stopped, then maybe they'd get rid of 3D...

@RockinKemosabe: There are some movies that would benefit from a rerelease the movies that deserve to be seen in big screen so I wouldn't mind a rerelease of something like the LOTR trilogy or other movies similar to that including ID4

@TheFaithfullyDeparted: But wouldn't you prefer to see the movie like you did the last time? In glorious 2D and save a couple bucks not wearing 3D sunglasses?

@RockinKemosabe: Yeah it would be nice if theaters also rereleased the 2D version as well but I wouldn't mind paying a couple of more dollars as long as i get to see the film. And I'm one of the weird people who doesn't get headaches and is still able to get sucked into a film's world as long as the movie is good enough. From what I've heard so far the rereleases 3D effects have ranged from ok to slightly good, nothing that would detract form the experience and maybe add a little

@TheFaithfullyDeparted:

I love 3D, but only if it's immersive, and intricately assembled like Avatar and Hugo both were. Post-conversion feels cheap, which is why this news doesn't excite me. I also don't have a problem with the 3D sunglasses, like you too. I actually think they're kinda cool, and comfortable to wear.

@PenguinDust: I'd really like to see Dial M in 3D. Just don't know if there would be enough demand for those movies.

I like 3D. I just don't think it is a little unethical to convert a movie without the (living) director's permission.

I sincerely doubt it, but as an experiment, I think that one above all others would be worth the upgrade cost. The thing is, I don't believe the road block lies with the studios but rather with the theater owners. I don't believe they're going to want to give up profitable screen time to a movie from 60 years ago even if it is in 3D and considered a classic. It's much safer to show Battleship again.
