Is a fifth indiana jones really necessary?

Nope.  The forth was unnecessary.  The first 3 movies were good and then there was the under appreciated TV series (watch the Sean Patrick Flannery episodes).  They still pump out a game on occasion.

Lucas has had some success with The Clone Wars show, maybe a cartoon would work.  I hate the animation design of Clone Wars, so I'd prefer something with more polish than what's currently airing on Western TV.  There were a few good segments in Batman Gotham Knights which are on the order of my desires. EXAMPLE  Come to think of it, if they want to keep the franchise alive they could do an anthology DVD like that or the Animatrix.  I just don't want to see Harrison Ford huffing and puffing around anymore, plus I have absolutely no fondness for "Mutt".

I thought the fourth one had some pretty low points but not that bad although it was not necessary. The problem I had with it was that Ford always had this look on his face like it was a parody or something, nothing in it felt serious and Lucas found a way to stick green screen bull shit in it. I enjoyed it any way but I hope they dont make another.

Well, the 4th was bad for two reasons.  Lucas had his hands too much in the production (CG Gophers?), and David Koepp is a terrible writer most of the time.  The dialog didn't have any life in it, it felt forced and most of the didn't have any real charm to it, again, a Koepp trademark.

There were a lot of really neat ideas, and overall, it was still a B Science Fiction film, with Indy surviving a nuclear blast.  I loved that scene, though most didn't.  To me it was symbolic of the fact that Jones can't die, at least not till Ford kicks it, and he is way too Bad Ass for that.   The man patrols the Hudson River in a Helicopter for crying out loud!

As far as a fifth one?  It really depends.  Who writes it and how much of a hand will Lucas have in it.  We need more true action adventure films, but we should avoid the use of "dimensional beings."

Can Harrison Ford limp his way to a new one, though? Guy's looking super old.

There is no fourth Indy movie why would they make a fifth.

I wish they'd make it a spiritual sequel rather than an actual sequel. The problem with casting Ford again, or continuing from Crystal Skull and having  Shia Labeouf  be the protagonist, is personally the 1950s aren't as interesting a time period for me as the 30s-40s. Maybe because Nazis are more fun as villains than communists? I'd rather they keep the themes/style the same and create fresh characters. Trying to shoehorn in old man Ford just makes the whole thing a bit sad.

Well, what you have to realize is that the acquisition of Lucasfilm includes Indy too, not just Star Wars, it's just that SW has always overshadowed Indy and still is, but it's more than likely that just as there are now going to be infinite SW films there are also going to be infinite Indiana Jones films.

@fuzzay: Perhaps Disney can travel back in time and present a final draft to a healthier Harrison Ford.

Necessary is such a funny word. No movie is necessary. Not a single one. If they made a 5th one I'd watch it. I've enjoyed them all enough to at least watch the next one once it hit Netflix. If it sucks and was terrible, well I wouldn't watch it and that would be that.

I might be in the minor, but I personally did not hate Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but that doesn't mean I'm all for another Indiana Jones film. Don't you think it's time they put the franchise to rest?

everyone liked KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL when it came out. They only started hating it a few years later. It had a 65/Green/GenerallyFavorable on Metacritic and a 78%/Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

@VioletEyedDragon:

Well critics aren't moviegoers, besides I still remember the film having mixed opinions when it was first released.

Some hated it, some liked it, very few loved it.

it's Cinemascore on opening weekend was a solid B, which proves your point, but also shows that the movie was generally well-received.

Also, box office was $317 million domestic an $469 million foreign for a worldwide total of $786 million. It placed third on the year's domestic top grossers (behind The Dark Knight and Iron Man) and second on the worldwide top grossers (behind only The Dark Knight).

@VioletEyedDragon:

A B is actually a little more mixed. A movie like Green Lantern got a B cinemascore for instance.

And Box office does not equal quality.

you're right that box office doesn't indicate quality. critical scores indicate quality. and the critics really liked the movie.

i am surprised a B is considered low. i am also surprised anyone liked GREEN LANTERN.

@DirrtyNinja:

Excuse me mister, but Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the best movies ever made. You've got action, romantic chemistry between two leads, and a quest to save the world from the Nazi's. How can you possibly not like that summary?

Back on track, though. Indy 4 was a very entertaining film, but I don't think it's one of the best films in the series. I think a new sequel could be a good thing if George Lucas, Steven Spielberg or any other director manages to bring back the magic of the first 3 films.

@VioletEyedDragon:

It's not, a B cinemascore is considered to be just okay.

Besides cinemascore are usually done from the first screenings, so opinions are bound to change.

Anyone remember that Indiana Jones game that was supposed to come out for (what was then called) the "next-generation" consoles?

I remember seeing a trailer of Indy fighting a guy on top of a moving bus or something - it was really impressive, and I think they may have used the physics engine from The Force Unleashed.

Ah, found the trailer:

I guess it doesn't look as impressive now, but I would rather have a good Indy video game than another movie.
