The third film in the Iron Man trilogy that in many ways has sparked a new time period for Marvel movies. No longer directed, still executive produced however, by Jon Favreau but instead taken over by Shane Black who had worked with Robert Downey Jr., who plays Tony Stark, in previous works. Taking place after the event of The Avengers, Stark now finds himself no longer up to task full task of being a superhero. He has begun to have panic attacks and is realizing a lot of his previous choices in life are coming back to haunt and hurt him and those closest to him. In some ways Iron Man 3 could prove to be the Downey/Stark character since currently Downey is still in negotiations to appear in future movies. The film itself was released to high praise from both fans and critics but still falls short of the quality of the first film. Despite some shortfalls the movie has made a huge impact at the box office and only falls short of the blockbuster Avengers in terms of ticket sales.
With a flashback to New Year's Eve 1999 in Cern, Switzerland when the old booze hound, skirt chasing, Tony Stark was still in full form. While Tony is focused on a beautiful botanist who is having troubles perfecting her genetic modification of plants that could prove to be a way to heal humans almost instantly from almost any injury, he is stopped before boarding an elevator. The man who stops him is Aldrich Killian, a disabled scientist who has begun an upstart think-tank group called the Advanced Idea Mechanists and quickly hands Tony and the Maya Hanses, the botanist played by Rebecca Hall, his card. Tony ignores the young scientist and even blows him off by agreeing to meet him on the roof but never does.
Jump to today where Stark is now Iron Man but is still struggling with the events of the Avengers film, including an interdenominational alien invasion. His issues have turned into panic attacks and a lack of sleep has turned Stark into an Iron Man suit making machine. This constant building, and usual emotional distance becoming worse, has caused some friction in Tony's relationship with Pepper Potts, still played by Gwyneth Paltrow, who now lives with Tony but is still running Stark Industries as well. All the while a new villain has appeared on the scene named the Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley. As Stark tries his best to keep an eye on Mandarin but also dealing with his issues his longtime personal bodyguard and now head of Stark Industries security, Happy Hogan, is hurt in one of Mandarin's attacks. After visiting his friend in the hospital one of the reporters hits a raw nerve within Stark who issues a challenge to the Mandarin directly, including sending out his home address on TV.
The threat is met by Mandarin who doesn't waste much time attack Stark's home shortly after Maya shows up at Stark's front door. Despite saving both Maya and Pepper, Tony ends up almost being crushed by his own home falling into the ocean. Luckily Jarvis, Stark's built-in artificial intelligence, combined with his new suit are able to escape just in time even though everyone assumes the Iron Man to be dead. Tony awakens, still flying in his suit, in Tennessee where Jarvis has flown him as another viable site of a Mandarin bombing to investigate. After shuffling through snow Tony finds a small backyard shed to begin repairing his heavily damaged suit and is discovered by a local boy who begins helping him out.
After being attacked amid his investigation Tony leaves the town and the boy to repair his suit and begins heading to the course of the Mandarin broadcasts in Miami. After a visit to a hardware store Tony equips himself and now knows what he is facing as some form of Extremis, Maya's former work, turned into a human weapon and potentially a human bomb, like the one that injured Happy. After infiltrating the home of Mandarin he discovers Mandarin is only an actor, hired by AIM to take all the heat and blame for the real attackers. All the awhile Aldrich has been trying to convince Stark to join him and is now forcing Tony's hand by capturing Pepper. At the same time War Machine, now re-branded as the Iron Patriot, has been lured away and captured by AIM.
Stark escapes and finds Rhodes who explains what has happened. Stark does his best to stop an AIM controlled Iron Patriot attack on Air Force One but arrives too late to save the president from being kidnapped in hopes of controlling the country through the vice-president who is in on the plan because AIM offers a cure for his daughter's disability. Stark and Rhodes hunt down Aldrich and AIM to an off-shore oil refinery where they split up, Tony going after Pepper and Rhodes going after the president. As their assault begins Tony is able to even the numbers by summoning all his suits of armor to the refinery where they are able to assist Tony and distract most of AIM's henchmen.
Rhodes is successful is saving the president and Tony finds Pepper, who has now been treated with Extremis herself, just as the platform collapses and she falls into a fire. Tony now fights Aldrich and traps him inside one of the Iron Man suits before causing it to self-destruct. Tony, now tired and with no armor on, realizes that neither Aldrich nor Pepper have died, both being healed by their Extremis powers. Just as Aldrich is about to kill Tony an Iron Man suit flies at Pepper, thinking she is an AIM infected with Extremis, giving Pepper a moment to destroy the armor and utilize one of the arms to attack and finally kill Aldrich.
Having been overwhelmed with the events of the Avengers and now his previous demons coming to haunt him Tony makes changes to his life. He starts by promising Pepper to devote more of his life to her and begins to destroy his Iron Man armors one by one. He then finds a cure for Pepper's Extremis and removes the dangerous shrapnel that was near his heart since he first became Iron Man. Despite all these changes Tony says that no matter what he will still be Iron Man.
