In March 2010, Swagger won the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania XXVI to earn an opportunity to challenge for either the WWE Championship or World Heavyweight Championship at any time he chose. The following night on RAW, he attempted to cash in this chance against the WWE Champion John Cena but decided against it after he realized Cena was not in bad enough condition for him to win easily. Four days later on SmackDown, he attempted again to cash in his title shot after the World Champion Chris Jericho was speared by Edge. This time he was successful and won the World Heavyweight Championship and moved to the SmackDown brand. Three months later he would lose the title to Rey Mysterio at the Fatal 4-Way pay-per-view.

In February 2011,Swagger became the trainer for Michael Cole as he prepared to face Jerry "The King" Lawler at WrestleMania XXVII. After the match, they continued their alliance and in the 2011 WWE Draft he was drafted back to RAW to join Cole.
