Jackie Chan is Retiring From Action Movies

One of the greatest action stars who ever lived is retiring from action movies. He was quoted saying:

“This is my last action film,” he said. “I tell you, I’m not young any more. I’m really, really tired. And the world is too violent right now. It’s a dilemma -- I like action but I don’t like violence.”

I guess this day had to, he is after all 58 years old. But I always loved watching Jackie Chan martial art films when I was younger, like Super Cop, First Strike and Operation Condor amongst others. The stuff he did, no stunt double was completely engaging to watch, plus his films were some of the last that I remember to have a blooper reel playing during the closing credits.

He did say he wasn't retiring from acting, he still wants to movies just no genre action movies. But if there is one positive to come out of this, it's that there'll never be another horrendous Rush Hour movie.

So thank you Jackie Chan for all your awesome action movies and video games.

Did anybody ever watch Jackie Chan Adventures when they were younger like me?

I knew it couldn't last forever. He has done a ton of films and a lot of great action films, not to mention like 90% of the stunts himself.

Just hope this doesn't mean he'll be in a lot of bad movies that just don't have action.

To be honest, this is what I remember most about him. I haven't watched too many of his movies but I loved that show.

@TopSteer: There are (or at least were) quite a few up on Netflix instant, especially some of his older Chinese ones. I wrote some blogs a bit back if you want to see a few write ups on the ones that I watched on Netflix.

I think Jackie could be a great drama actor. I thought he was at least ok when he did that car scene in the new karate kid movie.

One more thing!

I totally saw the Jackie Chan Adventures Show as a kid.

Jackie Chan is my all-time favorite actor. It saddens me to know that he's retiring from the genre he has always been amazing in. But, if he does more dramatic roles like he did, in the Shinjuku Incident (which is probably the grittiest movie he's ever done in Hong Kong), or the Karate Kid remake, then I'll wish him the best of luck.

@roger778: Totally agree with the Karate Kid remake, he did really well as the trouble old master. That character had a few dimensions and none of them were telegraphed to the audience. It was a subtle performance for a good part of that film.

My first Jackie Chan movie was Rumble in the Bronx and I was hooked ever since.  Can't blame the guy for retiring at the age of 58.

I love Chan's movies, but retiring from action isn't a bad idea. No one wants to see him jumping around at 66 like Harrison Ford in The Crystal Skull movie.

I think my first exposure to Jackie Chan was in The Cannonball Run where, I think he played a Japanese guy. I'm not sure if that really counts, though. My earliest memory where I knew him as a Hong Kong action star might have been The Protector co-starring Danny Aiello. It wasn't very good, but that and his previous American outing, The Big Brawl piqued my interest. I became a fan with Rumble in the Bronx (filmed in Vancouver I believe).

Well he is an old man now. Guess we'll never a fourth Rush Hour movie now that he's retired from action movies.

There's a new update to that article in which he clarifies that he's not done with action movies, he's just done doing all the crazy stunts.

So, uh, yeah.

I watched most of his movies before Jackie Chan Adventures was on TV. A TV station I got as a kid did a marathon, playing his movies in order, one every week, right through the catalogue, and I watched pretty much every single one.

My first Jackie Chan movie was The Legend of Drunken Master. The ending fight scene in that was eye-opening to me. Oddly enough, where most people were probably introduced to martial arts and kung-fu movies by typical flicks like Enter The Dragon or 36 Chambers, this was the movie that introduced me to martial arts flicks (aside from 3 Ninjas and Surf Ninjas...but I mean REAL martial arts movies...not to discredit the excellence of 3 Ninjas...fuck, you know what I mean).

After that, my brother and I went on a wild adventure of renting movies from Blockbuster, which introduced us to Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and eventually into stuff with Sonny Chiba and Hong Kong cinema. Without that flick, Lord knows how long it would've taken for me to get into those flicks (actually, it would've probably been about another two years because I would be in high school by then).

So thanks to Jackie, I was introduced to an incredible world where fighting actually MEANT something. The fights themselves were usually a representation of pure good vs evil, and when they weren't, there was always some beauty in how everything just fit together. However, Jackie was the one guy that I could always watch and KNOW it was HIM doing the stunts, taking the falls, flipping out and doing crazy shit.

His stunt work is gonna be sorely missed.

Reports emerged from Cannes this weekend that 58-year-old Jackie Chan is retiring from the action genre. Only, it turns out he he isn't.

While promoting Chinese Zodiac -- his hundredth film -- he told The Telegraph that "this is my last action film. I tell you, I’m not young any more. I’m really, really tired. And the world is too violent right now. It’s a dilemma -- I like action but I don’t like violence.”

But that wasn't quite correct, it seems, and the actor posted the following on Facebook to clear things up:

"I just want to let everyone know that I am not retiring from doing action movies. What I meant to say is that I need to do less of the life risking stunts on my movies. After all these years of doing so many stunts and breaking so many bones, I need to take better care of my body so I can keep working."

Here here!

@Paindamnation: Good to know! But then again I wouldn't want a Jackie Chan movie where he doesn't do his own stunts. Unless it was something a bit more dramatic and flexed his acting muscles.
