James Gunn is an American director, writer, actor, musician and cartoonist. Most notably for writing the screenplay for 2004's Dawn of the Dead and both directed and writing 2006's Slither. Was married to actress Jenna Fischer before getting divorced in 2008.
Born on August 5, 1970 to a large Irish family in St .Louis, Missouri. Is the brother of actor Sean Gunn, actor and political writer Matt Gunn, writer Brian Gunn and producer Patrick Gunn. James Gunn began making 8mm films at the age of 12. As a child he attended St. Joseph Manchester Elementary school in Manchester, Missouri. Attended Saint Louis University for his B.A. in Theatre, continuing graduate studies at Columbia University and obtaining his MFA in Creative Writing.
Gunn began his career at Troma Entertainment where he co-wrote and co-directed 1996 independent film Tromeo and Juliet. Gunn would then write, produce and star in a superhero comedy, The Specials. Gunn's first major screenplays was 2002's Scooby Doo and 2004's Dawn of the Dead. In 2006 James Gunn made his directorial debut with Slither a comedy horror, although it was the 8th best reviewed movie of 2006 it is considered a box office bomb, only making 12.8 million theatrically, after dvd sales it still only made 28 million below it's total budget of 30 million dollars. Gunn is set to direct a 2010 superhero movie 'Super' starring Rainn Wilson and Liv Tyler.
James Gunn is also a novelist having in college written several comics for several colleges and underground newspapers. Wrote his first novel 'The Toy Collector' in 2000. Gunn is also a musician in the band The Icons and has released an album entitled Mom, We Like it Here on Earth. The band is a mix of alternative rock, gothic rock and punk.
