One of Dunder Mifflin's best paper salesmen, Jim Halpert nonetheless would be completely uninterested in his job were it not also where Pam works. Jim is much more serious and capable than most people in the office and his deadpan demeanor is often a comic foil for Michael and Dwight.

A salesman at the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of paper supplier Dunder Mifflin, Jim Halpert is a classic underachiever who is entirely overqualified for his position. Early on it becomes apparent that while Jim is uninterested in his job and the performance of the company he stays mainly due to the secret flame he holds for receptionist Pam Beesly. When Pam's fiancee, warehouse worker Roy, announces a wedding date Jim immediately transfers to the company's Stamford branch and begins dating coworker Karen Filippelli. After his branch is closed though Jim must return to Scranton and confront the Pam situation once more, finally asking her out once she and Roy break up.
After several months of dating and Jim and Pam finally get married and it's announced later that Pam is pregnant. Jim is given more responsibilit at the Scranton branch when named assistant regional manager, but retains his sales representative position after the company is bought by Sabre when he learns they do not cap commissions. Jim is on good terms with almost everybody in the office (though they never respect his authority), except for Dwight, who Jim constantly plays pranks on, and Ryan, who sees Jim as a roadblock for his ambitions.
