Mark Kermode MURDERED the film

Mark Kermode fucking murdered the film on his podcast. And all of Andrew Stanton's intentions.

I haven't heard him hate a film so much in a long while, since Bride Wars.

Some choice quotes:

"It makes Dune feel like Speed."

Quote:

It's not a personal movie. It's not a Scott Pilgrim, it's not a Howard the Duck, it's not a Heaven's Gate, it's not a movie that says 'you know what, I know this film's going to die, I know it's not going to make its money back, but I made the movie I wanted to make'. It looks - and this is the worst crime - like a film that was made by committee. Like a film that was absolutely molded by a group of people sitting in a room, doing the maths. It's a film whose title doesn't make sense because of advertising executives. It's a film in 3D because of sales managers and studio heads. It's a film whose narrative doesn't make any sense to anyone who hasn't read all the books...Even all the setpieces are boring. It's not a personal film. It's an ocean liner, it's an oil tanker, it's a behemoth, it's a huge great articulated lorry of a movie, lumbering from setpiece to setpiece in 3D, with people explaining the plot to you...To spend $250 million on something that looks like it's focus-grouped out of existence!

I'm keen to see the video of this rant :D

What's the name of the podcast? I may seek it out, and in the process I may ditch the Filmcast.

I believe this is it. Here you go: http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/kermode

Ouch! That's a bit of a surprise, to be honest. The interview with Stanton they did a couple of weeks ago was really frosty (uncomfortably so, at times), but I thought that Kermode's reminder that this was the guy who was involved with Wall-E and the Toy Story trilogy meant that he was aware of and positive towards his work. That quote there seems to be quite a pointed criticism towards the director -- clearly in response to the director's interview.

Haven't had a Kermodian rant like that in quite a while! I love Mayo's unwillingness to say he disliked any movie

The Slash filmcast? Yikes.

Mark Kermode's podcast, Kermode and Mayo, is probably the best radio movie podcast out there. They have the funniest emails, constant director/actor guests, and very tuned in with their community.

Also, their Youtube channel has all the reviews on video. And Kermode Uncut is awesome. Classics such as his Transformers reviews:

I thought the movie was pretty good. Just saying.

O that was a good rant I just might add him to the podcast list

As far as critics go Kermode is one of the very few who's opinion still matters to me.

When you see vapid, quote-whoring studio shills like Pete Hammond splayed across every ad you gravitate towards critics who are passionate, and there are few more passionate than Kermode. Especially when it comes to genre cinema.

Don't forget, he used to write for Fangoria and has been a staunch supporter of horror movies for decades.

As far as I'm concerned Mark Kermode (and some of the good people on IMDB agree with me), he's a babbling idiot. Look at that pic of him, he looks like the last person you'd invite to a party.

I saw the film and as far as I'm concerned this is a horrible review.. He acts like it's the worst movie ever (my god what an idiot).

And I know plenty of people who went to this film and actually understood what was going on (none of them have read the books).

Any-who thanks for describing yourself Mark. You're the last critic I'd ever trust.

@Moviemaniac: Mark Kermode is actually really intelligent and insightful. I got a bad first impression of him too, but his Sex and the City 2 review made me at least respect his opinion. Then after watching some of his video blogs, I was finally won over. I doubt you'll change your mind, but try not to write him off. He's worth listening to.

@Moviemaniac: I'm not sure I'd give too much time to the physical appearance of a film critic, it shouldn't really impact on what they say about a movie. As for his reputation, he's been voted Britain's most trusted film reviewer. Having said that, I can see why someone would find his style to be a bit of a negative. I really like his stuff, but I get that he might appear grating to some.

Here's The First Ten Minutes Of John Carter

Disney's movie is doing poorly in tracking, so they release a ten-minute clip that has no aliens or Mars or hot princesses in it. Um, ok!

Trailer 3: John Carter

Disney apparently took the challenge of that actually-decent fan trailer seriously, and decided to beef up this last trailer with...dubstep? Oh, Disney!

Trailer 2: John Carter

This looks like some ridiculous mashup of Attack of the Clones, Stargate, and Wild Wild West. Will it be good? We'll find out in March!

Trailer: John Carter

Dune meets Cowboys and Aliens? This live-action debut of Pixar director Andrew Stanton is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter Of Mars.
