This Fan-Made John Carter Trailer Actually Makes It Look Mildly Interesting

This trailer does two things that Disney has neglected completely; one, tell the premise of the whole damn thing in a coherent way, and two, push the "From the director of..." factor. I mean, Andrew Stanton is not a household name, but once people are reminded of what he's done, they'll pay attention. As for telling the premise of John Carter, it really is quite astounding how terrible most of the official trailers have been here (there's at least one that I really liked though, and sold me on it). Disney really is getting very, very bad at marketing these days - it's no wonder why films like Prince of Persia and Tron: Legacy underperform at the box office when Disney makes them look so lame.

The only thing I wish they had done in addition to all this would be to make a custom logo. "John Carter" is so fucking stupid; is Disney really assuming that THAT speaks for itself? At least "John Carter OF MARS" says that it's an adaptation of Princess of Mars, and has a cool (major) science fiction element. The bland desert environment really hurts the visuals of the movies; passing it off as Mars makes it seem somewhat more excusable. It even looks pretty cool in shots if you know what it's supposed to be. But it seems like all Disney cares about is hiding anything REMOTELY "sciencey", so dumbass midwestern people don't get scared off. That's the no.1 thing I fucking can't stand about the marketing of all this.

The movie is probably going to be great; that's the shame here. It's almost guaranteed to fail though. Unless it can repeat the same trick Avatar did of being fucking loathed until it actually came out, and then getting everyone to forget about it's terrible blue cat people designs and get onboard just to see what a 3D film looks like. Seriously - that's beyond unlikely. I can guarantee though that Disney has a better movie on their hands than fucking Avatar though. But NO movie is going to pull off that trick again.

I could not agree more.

It's not the trailer that puts me off of this movie. It's just about everything else.

The casting and the snippets of their perfomances shown, the effects, the setting, the costume and character design, what little they did convey of the plot/premise (another old 'outsider saves the natives, gets the girl' type of story dug up and made into a movie). It all just feels...trite. And a bit cheesy to boot.

I actually thought the first John Carter trailer with Peter Gabriel playing in the background looked pretty good. This new trailer was also pretty good and the film itself doesn't look bad. It annoys me that everyone calls John Carter a rip-off of other stuff, but it's based on a book that was written 100 years ago.

As a plebeian who had (And somewhat still has) little to no knowledge about John Carter or the many Edgar Rice Burroughs novels this film is based off, I can safely say that the original trailers did nothing to tell me what the Goddamn hell was going on. Seeing that fan edit trailer on the other hand with the new footage of John Carter on Earth was enough to help clear up a lot of questions I had.

Well hopefully now Disney will start to ramp up the marketing and get this into the public’s eye well before it comes out. When’s the release date again?

This film is doomed.

Was that an epic version of 'Come With Me' in that trailer?

Mildly interesting is an overstatement. Not sure what that fan trailer is supposed to do for me that the other one didn't. Guess I'm not a fan of something that only exists in the wake of Avatar when Avatar wasn't an especially good film to begin with. White boy saves the tribe. Nah I'm good.

This.

I didn't really need a good trailer to be interested in this film, but before seeing this, I wouldn't have known that John Carter came from earth at the time of what looks like the industrial era.

So Disney, fire your marketing team and start hiring some talented people.

@ryanwho:

Avatar is John Carter, not the other way around. Get your facts straight.

Seriously, I had no idea that he was an average man. I assumed he jumped super high because of the gravity difference, but they made him out to be some super hero or something. I am actually interesting in this film now.

Here's The First Ten Minutes Of John Carter

Disney's movie is doing poorly in tracking, so they release a ten-minute clip that has no aliens or Mars or hot princesses in it. Um, ok!

Trailer 3: John Carter

Disney apparently took the challenge of that actually-decent fan trailer seriously, and decided to beef up this last trailer with...dubstep? Oh, Disney!

Trailer 2: John Carter

This looks like some ridiculous mashup of Attack of the Clones, Stargate, and Wild Wild West. Will it be good? We'll find out in March!

Trailer: John Carter

Dune meets Cowboys and Aliens? This live-action debut of Pixar director Andrew Stanton is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter Of Mars.
