I'm a massive fan of Jurassic Park. I know just about everything there is too know about the movies, books, and even some of the games (Trespasser in particular). And something has bugged me ever since I was a kid, If you have the DVD, Blu-Ray, or any other media that it's been printed on (So about anything) pop it in and watch the T-rex scene. For those of you who don't own it, though you probably have a Pringles can with it packaged inside somewhere, Here's a (Slightly) abridged version of the scene:
So the scene opens up to the cars stuck on the track in front of the T-rex exhibit. The powers out so the cars can't move at all. From the driver's point of view, to the right of the cars is the T-rex exhibit. To the left is the bathrooms and more jungle, as seen when the Lawyer tries to run away. Ahead of them and behind them are tunnels that continue through the island, as seen when they were here earlier. I guess it's possible this is a different section of the T-rex exhibit and the path just continues, but the cars can't move anyway.
On to the editing problem! So the T-rex escapes and attacks them. It's a great scene and even today It's impressive. T-rex escapes, and attacks the kids. There are some editing problems with the glass being broken and then being solid, but it doesn't really affect the story like the issue I found. Grant tries to distract the t-rex by throwing a flare into the exhibit. Now, look at the other side of the fence. There's jungle the entire length of the fence, it never dips down at any point. Jeff Goldblum being the idiot that he is lights his won flare and the T-re chases him.
The rex knocks him into the bathrooms on the other side where it eats the Lawyer. Note there are no dips on this side either. So while Ian is being stupid, just another day of being played by Jeff Goldblum, Grant goes to help the kids out of the turned over car. He manages to get one of them out when the T-rex shows up. through some somewhat hilarious scenes the T-rex manages to push them over the edge. What edge you ask? The edge that magically shows up.
Over the concrete base of the fence is now a massive drop. Now remember, the only thing separating the road and the jungle was the fence. There was no drop before, the T-rex just stepped over. In fact seconds before they go over you can see the jungle on the other side, just feet away. Now, maybe this drop is just hidden. Kind of like that pit that separates on lookers from the orangutans so they don't climb over the fence. t-rexes are big mother fuckers, maybe he just stepped over it. You could argue that if it didn't shove a Car over the edge.
When the car plummets you can clearly see that there is no ground parallel to the road. it just seems like there's a plummet and jungle for miles around. Where did the fucking T-rex come from then? That being said Jurassic Park remains one of my all time favorite movies, and despite numerous editing issues (how did the T-rex get in the enrichment center at the end?) it still holds up much better then quite a few movies from the same time period. Hell, most modern movies can't match the animatronics of the original. I just find it odd that as big as the fandom is, no one's noticed this issue before. I guess it was over shadowed by the many, MANY plot holes in the second and third movies...which are also some of my all time favorites.
