There’s a part of me that would be OK with--maybe even devilishly amused by--the notion of the Jurassic Park franchise spinning out like the Planet of the Apes pentalogy did in the 70s. They both started with very loose adaptations of sci-fi novels; why not swap monkeys for dinos and go buck wild? If Joblo’s saying that there was a JP sequel in development for a while that was essentially a serious version of those Terrible Thunderlizards shorts from Eek! The Cat, I guess an Escape from the Planet of the Apes-style sitcom that only incidentally featured dinosaurs wouldn’t be that far out of the realm of possibility.
Who knows? Maybe that could be the joker on the felt table. THR’s reported that Spielberg’s been meeting A-list screenwriter, Mark Protosevich, to spitball ideas for rebooting Jurassic Park. I figure that means they’re just thinking farther outside the box for a JP4 idea instead of actually considering a remake of the movie. JP3 ended with the bitchin’ Aliens-like prospect of a crack team of commandos finally putting the hurt on these unholy monsters, but I guess that spark never lit enough people's fire.
I thought the Lost World was a mess and JP3 was pure, straight fun. As timeless as Jurassic Park is (man, do those effects hold up,) I don’t consider it sacrosanct enough to rule out the brand being used to put more dino action on screen. I guess if they really wanted to get crazy, they could buy the license to Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and make it into some sort of composite adaptation like On Stranger Tides.
