There are plenty of times when I look at a film, and wonder why the film was even made in the first place. That isn't to say that every movie must serve an important cosmic service to the universe, but at the same time, I can't help but wonder, if this film brings nothing new, fresh, or even interesting then WHY BOTHER?

I would like to think that in some way, every good film brings something. Even if it is not at all fresh, perhaps it brings a good level of interesting action in the form of a good set piece sequence, or just some good strong humour, or maybe an interesting character. They don't have to be mind bending, life changing, genre redefining works, but they should at least bring something to the collective table.

On the surface, Knight and Day looked like at best it could bring something in the form of the quirky character played by Tom Cruise. Post-Oprah, Cruise hasn't really played a looney whack job in a movie that more closely reflects his redefine public persona. I say that, accutely aware of his comedic turns in Magnolia and Tropic Thunder.

However, this movie squanders an opportunity to create a compelling or even vaguely interesting character for Cruise, and so all we end up with is a movie that brings nothing interesting, and certainly nothing original to the table. Cruise's quirky character is so bizarre, he is ultimately creepy and therefore there is no credible chemistry created between him and Cameron Diaz's character, who rightly spends most of the movie fearful of Cruise, and the rest of time seems to be under the influence of drugs which would rightly impair someone's judgement.

The rest of the movie is an uninteresting, uninspired film. The action sequences are dull, the espionage plot line is weak and is clearly not intended to be the focus of the movie and so it is treated with little respect, it is more included out of necessity because otherwise there would be zero context for anything going on.

It is the sort of movie that could only work commercially off the star power of its main actor, and it has quickly become clear that in this day and age, star power carries less influence than it used to. Further to that, it is also indicative of the fact that Tom Cruise's star power is on the wain.

Don't bother with this movie, there is just nothing compelling about it.

Knight and Day Trailer #2

Run, Tom, run! They want your juicy spy brain and Cameron Diaz accessory!

Knight and Day

Is Tom Cruise acting or just acting himself in this action-comedy where he plays a globe-trotting spy whose brain took a long walk off a short pier.
