In news that is sure to sadden the Royal Order of Dick Wolf Awesomeness, the creator of Law and Order has officially declared the show dead, dead, dead. The man with the best name in showbiz, Dick Wolf, told the Television Critics Association on Friday:

"I can confirm that it has moved into the history books. We exhausted every effort. There are so many factors that entered into the network's decision. Everything in life is a negotiation. In 25 years on air at NBC, we never failed to make a deal when there was a deal to be made."

Considering the show ran for an unbelievable 20 seasons and has multiple spin-off projects going strong, fans shouldn't be too sad about Wolf putting that final nail in the coffin. The newest spin-off, Law and Order: Los Angeles, will star Alfred "Horvath" Molina and Terrence Howard. The two will play District Attorneys, alternating episodes since they are busy men, and Skeet "Skeet" Ulrich will play an LAPD detective alongside Corey Stoll.

I'll leave you with a quote from Dick Wolf regarding the cancellation of the show and the nature of TV in general that is too matter of fact to be sad:

"I got a call like any other cancellation call. … Everything in TV is a death sentence. They just don't tell you when the execution is."

That last quote is just begging to be said by a grizzled detective lighting a cigarette.

I never liked any of the L&O's, but this show has literally been around as long as I have been alive. If I die now that this is dead, I'm having my remaining family sue NBC.

This show has been around longer than I've been alive, which is still crazy to think about. Alfred Molina being in a new spinoff seems ridiculously fantastic, though. I may have to check it out some time.

20 seasons for any show is a big deal but the show itself seemed really tired and overwrought with sadness and boredom.

I never really regularly watched Law & Order, but I did catch it on occasion when it was on, and I liked the standard Law & Order format a lot more than I liked the variants of it on Criminal Intent and Special Victims Unit.

While I liked L&O, I can't say that it ever quite captured my interest like it's spin-offs SVU, and even CI. Still, I'll miss the guy with the sweet mustache. The cast of L&O: LA has me pretty excited though, perhaps enough to even get me to watch TV again.

Shame,
I liked the original better than any of the spin-offs, probably.

Wasn't casting of Jeff Goldblum on CI basically the coroner's signature on the Law & Order death certificate?
