On the one hand, as a work of event television, a grand, epic-scoped conclusion to a cultural phenom of a show, it was exactly what it needed to be. It brought tons of satisfying, exciting, uplifting moments to bear, answered a few key things (however elusively), and closed with a poetic, emotionally bursting final shot that brought everything full circle.
On the other, "The End" pretty well shows that Lindelof, Cuse, and the rest of the LOST crew weren't planning these things out as painstakingly as perhaps had been alluded to. Huge chunks of story are still left in the ether, and I'm not even just talking about what that kooky ass light at the bottom of the cave actually is. From the absence of anything Walt, to the steadfast dedication to making the actual importance of Desmond's role seem utterly schizophrenic, to the endless string of seemingly pointless plot threads that rose up in just season six alone, there's a lot of stuff that just felt like...you know...it just didn't matter.
Anyway, I'm about to sit through Jimmy Kimmel for the first time in, like, years, to hear some of the cast interviews and see those alternate endings. You'll get to hear a LOT more of our opinions on "The End" as well as the entirety of the series on tomorrow night's Behind the Screened Door podcast. WE HAZ OPINUNZ. U WIL LISSEN TO DEM.
One way or another, it's been a hell of a ride.
