Maps are like porn to me. I paint them, I ogle them, I have map-print shirts, I never get lost. So when I saw that a geographer in Virginia, one Jonah Adkins, had constructed a comprehensive map of The Island from onscreen cues I was excited, to say the least. If I was an actual fan of the show I don't think I'd be at work today. Check it out for yourself. High-res version available at the author's site linked above.

@TheFaithfullyDeparted: You're right, I should have posted it in the TV section.

The one criticism I've read about the accuracy of this map is that the smaller island is placed too close to the main island's coast. Nitpicking, but...

Looking at that cool map makes me even angrier as to how bad and waffly the series finale.

@Matt: Fantastic!  Sayid would be proud.

A few things seem odd though:

  • The placement of the Lighthouse.  Jonah placed it on a south east point, making it on practically the opposite side of the Island from the Temple and over the two large mountain lines.  But if I remember correctly, it only took Hurley and Jack less than a day to get there, so it must be closer.
  • The 815 trajectory.  When Daniel Faraday gave the Freighter coordinates to Lapidus, he seemed to imply that if you didn't cross onto the Island from that exact direction, it could cause time anomalies(like what appened to some of the folks on 316).  So the Oceanic flight must have either flown over the Island in that (or the opposite) direction.  I think Jonah placed it where he did considering that Ben, etc. saw it exploding close to overhead from the barracks.  But I think a plane that high would still look overhead even if it were further south.
  • Hydra island seems too small.  We know that it had mountains and valleys similar to the main island, so it must be a little bigger than the less than 1 square mile that this map proposes.
  • What the fuck are those 2 other bodies of land off the south of the main Island?!?

Aside from those critiques though, it's beautiful map.  I'd love to see a map of the US and the UK (and Iraq?) Showing the locations of the flashback/flash forward events.  Somebody please make this.  Internet fame awaits!

(@TheFaithfullyDeparted: I think the LOST section is the perfect place for this.  Future people looking at the LOST page will see this lovely link in the forums section, but if it was moved to TV, it will just get... um... lost.)

Oh this is really cool! Thanks for sharing it.

@gangly: Good points, although I do remember there being another little close by island off the coast of the main island that they would go to every so often.

This has been tried before, there are a lot of people who have attempted to capture all the on-screen queues in one map. THe map looks amazing and is pretty close to all the others, definitely glad to have a high-res map reference now though!
