I know I'm pretty damn late to this whole thing but I just finished the series and absolutely loved it! I was wondering if anyone else was late watching it like me and wanted to either talk about it or point me in the right direction for more great shows. I need to fill this void in my heart where Lost and all its characters were... :(

If you liked LOST, you might also like...

Battlestar Galactica - Purely Brilliant, watch immediately
The Prisoner - Also brilliant, but in a slightly more abstract way
Fringe - Has a TON of problems and is quite often very frustrating, but I'm addicted to it

enjoy!

@gangly:  friends have tried to get me on the Battlestar train but I've resisted...why I don't know maybe its about time...and thanks I'll investigate

also if there's anyone out there with some good book recommendations for a Lost fan I'd love to hear them as well!

I'm going to back up gangly here and recommend you watch BSG immediately! Brilliant show all round and I think its definitely up there with LOST.

I was watching BSG and Lost together and I felt like they complemented each other well. I started watching Fringe because of J.J. Abram's name being attached. I've also found Doctor Who to be great. Less serializes than Lost or BSG but if you're paying attention they tie things together fairly nicely. And if, for some reason, you haven't seen The Wire yet that should be top on your list of TV shows to see.

@shankus: Dude, if you're a Lost fan you absolutely have to read the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The show runners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse cited the series as a huge influence. It has a very Lost-y feel with a dense mythology and mystery, and Dark Tower was a clear inspiration for stuff like the Man in Black and DHARMA.

Also, I'm glad to see that people are still watching and enjoying Lost. It seems like we're at the height of the internet backlash for the show, where every time I see it brought up it's a flood of people going "They just made it up as they went along blaaaaagh!" as if everything the show accomplished over its six years was moot because of the divisive finale (which I personally loved).

@shankus: There are a lot of books referenced in the show whose stories run parallel with recurring themes and things like that. There are a few episodes named after great books. But Lost was the only show I followed faithfully. I was always on message boards listened to podcasts. Man I miss that show.

Yeah.

Read up on Slaughter-House 5, Catch-22, and lord of the flies. They perihperally tie into the show but are a very curious look at the various themes of the show.

I loved Lost, and I even loved the end of Lost.  Sure, I accept that not everything gets a neat and tidy explanation, and that things that do are a little underwhelming at times, but that just proves the quality of mysteries themselves. I can't think of any show with moments quite as perfect as the scene with Locke after his father's betrayal, cutting to the reveal of the light in the hatch. Stephen King himself said something a while back about the show aspiring to something greater than television, to be mythological. As a huge mythology nut, it's easy to see where he's coming from. The show is about larger themes, larger ideas than just a bunch of people surviving on an island. Probably the most important aspect of the show is that just about every person who ended up on the island was just as "lost" in their lives prior to the island as they were on the island.

I look forward to the day when discussion of Lost is not derailed by people who seem to take the position that an ending that doesn't fully satisfy them renders the entire body of work meaningless (not to mention those who misinterpret the ending as "they were dead all along", especially the ones who do so on purpose). Nice to see this thread has not done so.

Anyway... Another Stephen King book that has a lot in common with Lost is The Stand, especially the final season. Randall Flagg is a little more definitively evil than Lost's Man in Black mind you.

It depends what you liked about Lost for other shows to be recommended.

Me personally, I watched Lost for the character progressions and arcs. I didn't really care about the million mysteries or science fiction or fantasy stuff. I really liked the characters and how the show explained their motives and made them believable. That's what I like most about shows.

I came from a background of enjoying Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other Joss Whedon works which typically do great character work. Not really as dramatic as Lost though. That's just my two cents, as someone who also enjoyed Lost I thought I'd mention other shows I happened to enjoy.
