If nothing else, one has to appreciate Robert Rodriguez’ penchant for simply saying what’s on his mind when he feels like it; he seems like one of the more genuinely unfiltered personalities working in Hollywood. Apparently he’s gone a bit beyond his normal carefree vocalisms, though, and has gone so far as to reference sequels to his upcoming Machete film in that film’s end credits, as The Playlist hints at in their report on the film’s press junket.

Rodriguez had this to say about some of the characters that he’s apparently saving for sequels:

"Some people who didn't die in the film actually did die, I just cut out their deaths. [I did so because] I wanted to save them for a sequel, but you actually see that they did perish. Where the movie will go next? I have a bunch of ideas for it. It's all in the end titles. We have to make them, of course, Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. Once you put it out there, just like we did with the trailer, you have to make it. When I made that trailer, for years — more than Sin City 2 — people would say, 'when are you going to make 'Machete?' This movie is almost a response to the fans. If they hadn't been after me....about making the movie, I really don't think we would gotten around do doing it."

So apparently, if all goes well, we could be seeing more Machete films in a year or two. Or, if the movie bombs, will this be another case of Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime League? Of course, we're talking about a movie that was based on a fake trailer that was put into Grindhouse and was never intended to become a film in its own right, so maybe Rodriguez is just getting more meta than anyone is willing to give him credit for? He sure sounds serious about the sequel possibilities here, but I guess we'll know more when we see the first weekend's box office receipts.

Hell, it's about time Danny Trejo's career as a leading man finally kicked off.

It's great Trejo's getting a ton of work but I hope Machete doesn't turn into the new Saw.

This is Rodriguez. Even if Machete doesn't do huge business it will still make money and he will find a way to do more between kiddie movies if he wants to do more. He is, after all, famous for filming movies in his backyard on weekends between other movies.

The man has 15 fucking blades under that coat. I'd say it's "blast off", not "kick off".

I want them to make Machete 1, 2 then skip 3 & 4 (because we all know they are going to suck) then make 5 and in 6 I want a full rebot.

I'm up for it.

F-yeah! If his kiddie movies actually can get sequels, why not Machete?

Just do it, as long as you can go on with Sin City 2 and Deadpool.

We'll see if this actually happens. The movie's certainly making enough money to justify it.
Machete Trailer

In case you were wondering, Danny Trejo is DEFINITELY the wrong Mexican to fuck with.
