Hey, he's already used to playing godlike digital spirits on giant screens.
Hey, he's already used to playing godlike digital spirits on giant screens.

The parallels are unmistakably there. Brando and Crowe are both highly-respected, serious actors with that elusive animal magnetism which makes for volatility on, and more often off, camera. Virtuosity aside, getting either of them star in a superhero movie sounds totally against type. Hell, Brando was even around the same age as Crowe is now when he starred in the first Superman. There you go--it's kismet.

Variety’s saying that Mr. Crowe is in talks right now to play Jor-El in Zack Snyder’s forthcoming Supes reboot, the Man of Steel. Those more familiar with the hero's lore will, of course, recall that character's the father of Kal-El (A.K.A. Superman.) Getting a huge name like Crowe for the part had been part of Christopher Nolan’s agenda while he was still godfathering the project and I have to say that I think he fits it better than Anthony Hopkins would have while he was attached to Brett Ratner’s unrealized Superman trilogy. I was always struck by a note from Mario Puzo’s early treatment for the original movies about how father and son should be played by the same actor. The ideal Jor-El should’ve been able to play Superman himself when he was younger.

If this gets locked, it really only leaves one more major character to cast, and that’s Supes’ mother, Lara. How about you Screened Pups start your fantasy casting call for that one?

Crow's not leading material anymore and he needs to make like Kevin Bacon and find a new identity for himself. I guess I could see him as the paternal character actor. But I really don't think Crow's career comes anywhere near touching Brandos. Brando had an amazing career, and when it fell, it was an amazing plummet (Island of Dr. Moreaux is fucking bonkers). Crow had an alright career and kind of slipped away, then poked out again for a few middling lead roles (Next 3 Days, Robin Hood).

Woah... new comment system... I like it.
I think that could work to have Crowe in that role but it all depends on what the fatherly character is going to be like in this movie. It is comforting to her that this was something Christopher Nolan wanted though and gives me some hope that Nolan's influence will be at least somewhat apparent in the film itself.

Anyone who's been in both LA Confidential and Gladiator has not just had an "alright" career.

Please let this be a joke.

While I can't say I like Nolan's version of Batman, I do like what he's been doing with Superman. Though this is leaving me puzzled as to what Zack Snyder is exactly doing on this movie. Crowe is a favorite actor of mine so I'm interested as to what his portrayal of Jor-El will be like.

I'd say when you pit that against the Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront and Last Tango in Paris, the word "alright" is almost generous. And I loved LA Confidential, and Gladiator was fine for an early Braveheart "me too" film of the time. Its not a pissing contest, Im just saying if it were, Crowe makes a decent stride but Brando's stream goes over the field goal crossbar.

Cool new comment system.

Honestly, I am not excited for Superman movies. They don't really speak to me for some reason.

I re-watched Robin Hood just recently and I want to just use this to say "Russell Crowe never once hits a Nottingham accent. Hell in the trip of accents around the British Isles he never makes it to the East Midlands". That is all.

@ryanwho: I was actually just about to comment on how Crowe is pretty incomparable to Brando. I don't think Crowe will ever top something like Brando's performance in Streetcar Named Desire.

Meh, Crowe has been going downhill really quickly over the past few years :(.

How about Betty White? They throw her in everything these days.

Can't we just edit in Marlon Brando posthumously like we did last time? That was sadly the best part of Superman Returns.

This is definitely positive!!! No need to compare Russell Crowe to Marlon Brando. Both are great actors in DIFFERENT generations.

With that said, I still hate Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and General Zod as the main villain.

As for Lara, I bet Demi Moore can do it without being overshadowed by Russell Crowe.

@ryanwho: You have got to be kidding! Crowe is still a major player and a big draw. Whether you like him as a person or not it can't be denied that he is a powerhouse of an actor. If you're looking for someone to build a spaceship for your son while your planet is exploding, Crowe fits the bill perfectly.

Its a small role, though. It seems like the kind of role better suited for an older, very high profile actor. Where Crowe I would think would have a more substantial role. He just doesn't seem like the "high profile cameo" type. Being a villain would be playing against type too, but that seems more like something in his wheelhouse. Playing Brainiac or something. Hell, I could even see him playing Lex Luthor. I'm not saying he can't pull off Jor El, he just seems a bit young to be taking that kind of part.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I love the idea of him playing Lex Luthor.

I demand to see Nic Cage in this movie. If he has to play Superman's mom, then so be it.

I'm a big fan of Crowe. I ignore all the stupidities he does in real life (who's perfect?) and enjoy his on screen persona. I say welcome!
