The Hunger Games return with such a sequel twist that you can't believe writer Suzanne Collins didn't think of film when writing. Catching Fire builds up with all types of subversive messaging which is interesting but also brings into relief the limitations of the genre and film.
A young woman, Martha May (Elizabeth Olsen), leaves a commune in upstate New York and seeks safe haven with her estranged sister (Sarah Paulson). Through flashbacks, the audience starts to see the reasons for Martha's escape as she slowly becomes mentally unhinged while staying with her sister and brother-in-law.
This hit from Sundance features John Hawkes as a domineering cult leader, and Elizabeth Olsen (of the Olsen Twins Olsens) as a girl damaged by his influence. Guess we know where the talent in that family went!
