The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the universe that started in 2008 with Iron Man. The most recent entry is The Avengers.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a shared universe of the Marvel Studios films based on Marvel Comics characters. 20th Century Fox currently owns the rights to the X-Men, so as a result they are not in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony made The Amazing Spider-Man to keep the rights to the Spider-Man franchise and prevent them from reverting back to Marvel Studios. While the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are mostly separate, discrete stories, they often contain references to other movies under the Marvel banner.
