The most iconic Disney character ever. He was originally voiced by Walt Disney himself.

Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character created by Walt Disney and is the most iconic Disney character worldwide.

Origin and History

Walt Disney first got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse from his pet mouse that he once had on his farm. Animator Ub Iwerks first drew sketches of Mickey Mouse in 1928 as a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, an early Disney character. Walt named  Mickey Mouse after actor Mickey Rooney.

Mickey made his debut, along side Minnie Mouse, in May, 1928 in the animated short film Plane Crazy. In the film, Mickey is portrayed as an aviator who throughout the film tries to woo Minnie. Plane Crazy did not impress audiences. A second Mickey film was released in August, 1928 called The Gallopin' Gaucho. It, much like  the first film, failed to impress anyone.

Steamboat Willie
Steamboat Willie
In November, 1928, Steamboat Willie was released. The short was a parody of Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr. This was the first Mickey film to actually find a distributor, thus marks his official debut. In Steamboat Willie, Mickey is the sole worker on a ship captained by Captain Pete. Minnie Mouse is the only passenger. Audiences were impressed with this one. The music and sounds for comedic purposes were reportedly favoured by audiences and were called "innovative". Following the release of Steamboat Willie, Felix the Cat's popularity dropped and Mickey's rose.

Mickey 's gloves first appeared in The Opry House in March 1929. The main reason for adding white gloves to him were so the viewer could see his hands against his body, as they were both black at the time. After the transition to colour, the gloves stayed. Mickey first appeared in colour in The Band Concert in 1935.  Mickey's previous films were also colourized in the future. In 1994, The Band Concert was named the third-greatest cartoon ever by animation professionals. In 1935, Walt Disney received a special Oscar for creating Mickey Mouse.

In 1938, Donald Duck made his debut. Donald was a very crazy, manic character, much like Mickey had previously been. This caused Mickey's character to be redesigned. After that redesign, Mickey hit the peak of his popularity.

In 1943, Mickey and his pet dog Pluto, starred in Lend a Paw. This film won Mickey his first, and only, competitive Oscar.

Adaptations

Comics

Beginning in 1930, Mickey appeared in a comic book titled Mickey Mouse and Friends. The comic introduced Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar, Black Pete, Sylvester Shyster, Minnie Mouse's parents, and her uncle, Mortimer Mouse.

The comic combined comedy and adventure, where as the Disney films continued to be just mainly comedy. Mickey going on adventures would continue to happen in the comics thought the next 50 years and on going.

Video Games

Epic Mickey

Mickey Mouse has also appeared in many video games, mainly released on Nintendo consoles. In 2002, Mickey was featured in the Disney/Square game Kingdom Hearts. He only actually physically appears at the very end of the game, but is mentioned from the start and plays a major role in the story. He is "King Mickey" king of Disney Castle and a Keyblade master. In the sequel, Kingdom Hearts II, King Mickey appears early on in the game wearing a black cloak and wielding his Keyblade. He provides a lot of back-story for the player.  In 2010, Mickey is set to star in Disney Epic Mickey, a supposedly darker view of the Disney world using old-school animation techniques.
