Plot Summary

In near-future Washington DC, violent crimes are becoming a thing of the past thanks to a new experimental form of police work called "Pre-Crime". Due to the extreme effects violence has on the human psyche, three powerful psychics known as Pre-Cogs are able to sense these crimes before they take place. Police detectives then go through the dream-like images produced and determine where and when the murder shall take place. It is a practice John Anderton (Tom Cruise), the chief of the new police unit, has become extremely good at and he intends to see the program expanded nation-wide. However, Anderton himself appears in a Pre-Cognitive vision, one that indicates he will murder a man within 36 hours of its discovery. Due to the tragic abduction of his son years earlier, this vision could be disturbingly accurate but Anderton flees rather than submit himself to police custody and is tasked with clearing his name and discovering who is pulling the strings over at Pre-Crime. With the help of one of the Pre-Cogs, Agatha (Samantha Morton), and a variety of sketchy characters, Anderton must challenge the very system he has put years of his life into perfecting.

Critical Reception

Minority Report was universally praised by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, 92% of the 225 reviews were positive. On Metacritic, it scored an 80, which puts it in the color "Green" (the highest color) and the category "Universal Acclaim" (the highest category). Of the Metacritic reviews, 34 were positive with 3 being mixed. None were outright negative.
