Famed novelist Paul Sheldon is in a car accident in a remote area of Colorado. He is rescued by Annie Wilkes, a huge fan of his. Trouble is, Annie really doesn't want him to leave until he finishes his next book for her.
Plot Summary
Paul Sheldon has just finished writing his latest book at an isolated lodge in the Colorado wilderness. On his drive out, his car slides off the road and he is badly wounded. Fortunately, he is rescued by Annie Wilkes, a local nurse who just happens to be a huge fan of Sheldon's "Misery" series. She insists that she will try to call a doctor as soon as the phones are up and running again, but she suggests Sheldon just relax and recover for the time being. Meanwhile, Paul's agent notifies the local Sheriff, Buster, of his disappearance and he sets to work finding out what happened to the popular novelist.
About a week after the accident the final book in the "Misery" series is released, and Annie immediately starts reading it. But when she gets to the end and discovers that the titular character is dead and the series is over, she becomes increasingly hostile towards Paul, insisting he has to write a sequel and rectify this situation. Paul soon realizes he is indeed a prisoner of this obsessive plan, as the phonelines have been up and running for sometime and the roads are certainly clear enough to drive into town and notify the local authorities of the accident. As Buster gets closer and closer to learning the true circumstances of Paul's disappearance, the author starts to formulate his own escape plan. All the while Annie gets more and more violent, putting the author in grave danger.
